Has the plastic 'cap' that holds the cable jacket to the hull fitting failed? Also check under the handlebars there should be a clamp of some sort that hold the outside of the cable in place, could have come loose. The cable outside covering may have worn a hole in itself from use & age, & that will cause the inside of the cable to 'flex' when turning left only.
