Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

Hello everybody,

OK...ordered a new trigger (CDI) as well as 3 coils (Mallory) and replaced everything, then put everything back together.

STILL running on 2 cylinders !!!!...getting a little frustrated now and wondering if I should just put everything aside and forget about it.

Kend301 (or others)...if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

Thanks to all,
Pat

EDIT: I asked my friend to use a device he has for ski-doo's to check the fire on each spark plug and the bottom plug (the one I've been having problems with from the beginning) seems to have bad fire...meaning it's missing some voltage...could this be the CDI box?? Your help is greatly appreciated...

Run a switchbox bias test ,
Set meter to 20 volts DC
Ground red meter lead , unplug the white/black wire and connect black meter lead to switchbox side .
Crank engine and post up voltage , should be 2-10 volts

Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

Thanks Kend301,

Well I just ran the switchbox bias test as per your instructions and the reading goes between 1.2 and 1.6 volts...looks like we have another problem behind door #2...LOL !!!

Does this mean I need a new switchbox?
If so, what's the model number I need to get?

Also, I read a lot about the volt regulator...any way of knowing if that's still good?
After that, how about the rev limter...should I also check that?
Finally, I think the only thing left is the stator...should I check for that as well?

After 3 new coils, 1 new trigger and now possibly a new switchbox...is there anything else that I should check before ordering 1 more part...transport fees are a **tch for Canada and if I can get all these parts in 1 shipment, it would be better.

Thanks for your patience here......man, I sure hope I can get this thing in the water before everything freezes over...LOL !!

Regards,
Pat

alright partner...stay safe!

Does this last test mean I need a new switchbox?

Thanks,
Pat

Yes switch box is bad , not uncommon to have multiple electronic part failures on these systems .

Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

On boats.net, I get model #18495A12 for the switchbox assembly...is that the rightmodel number?

Should I get a Merc (Quicksilver) original or do you suggest CDI (114-4953)? ....boy, they sure don't give these away..!!!!!

I look forward to your test procedures for the volt regulator, rev limiter and stator...hopefully I can make all these tests quickly and order whatever parts I need all at once.

Thanks,
Pat

Hey Kend301,

Hope you're well...if you have a minute, I'd love to get those tests before the weekend so the appropriate parts can be ordered.

Thanks again for your much appreciated help,
Pat

Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

Sorry it has taken so long , computer and internet problems , Here are the tests:
Voltage regulator , There is a test for this , calibrate ohm meter to 1k , Disconnect all regulator/rectifier leads . You will be testing a series of wires , then reversing the meter leads on the exact same wires. Note the readings , For every test there is no reading just should all be continuity one way and no continuity when meter leads are reversed .
1 Red to one of the yellow wires note reading , reverse meter leads , note reading.
2 Repeat test on other yellow wire.
3 regulator housing to yellow wire , note reading , reverse leads , note reading.
4 repeat with other yellow wire.
5 meter yellow to yellow note reading , reverse leads , note reading.

In all above tests you should have continuity in one hook up and no continuity when meter leads are reversed .

Rev Limiter , Only test is when it fails and you have no spark , disconnect the black/yellow from the limiter while it is still plugged in at the switchbox , Recheck for spark , if you have spark limiter is bad .

Stator : standard OHM test green/white to white/green .
Also check yellow to yellow resistance should be 0.6 to 1.1 then go yellow to ground on both wires individually and you should have no continuity on both .

Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

Hello Kend301,

Thanks for the above testing info and thanks for taking my call tonight...much appreciated as always!

For the benefit of others, contrary to post #17, we discovered i had a black stator and since my switchbox is fried, chances are the stator is as well..!!
Well regardless, to save on future headaches, I will be changing to the red stator.

Kend301 - please confirm I need the following:

1. Red stator kit with adaptor...model 398-832075A5 (should I go CDI...if so, what's the model number?)

2. Switchbox assembly...model 18495A12 (should I go CDI...if so, what's the model number?)

Thanks again,
Pat

Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

CDI does not make a kit with the adapter so your best bet is merc part number 398-832075a6 is the kit with the adapter , Sierra also makes the kit PN 18-5873 you will not find it listed as a sport jet application but it is what you need , Iboats has them . Sierra volt reg is pn 18-5743 Also in stock at Iboats , You know I run CDI stuff but since you have to get a sierra stator kit or stock mercury I gave you the best option for shipping to Canada .

Re: PM9 - Sportjet 90 problem...running on 2 cylinders

Thanks for the info Kend301,

clarification...the Mercury parts memo states A5 and you gave me A6...are they the same?

Also, you talk about the volt reg...I didn't think I needed one???

I thought it was the switchbox...please advise.

Thanks,
Pat
