Please Help!!

I am trying to take out my hold steering cable off my '87 115 Johnson. I can't tap the tube any further. I lack about an inch from getting it into the tilt tube, but I am scared to hit it any harder. The end is starting to mushroom just a little. Is there any way possible to get this thing out of there?

Oh man!! I hate when that happens! No real wisdom to offer, but inspiration,maybee. Use plenty of WD40 or other bolt-buster,and take an old broom handle that'll fit...Beat on the broom handle to save the threads. If you can thread a small nut on it to the end of the threads, this will also help to diminish mushroomin.<br />Also, heat, if you have a butane torch.
