Re: Please help

If you are completely new to boating than maybe what you are experiencing is normal and if it goes for a little bit the nose will drop back down and you will be "up on plane". If you are not completely new to boating than I apologize and did not mean to insult your intelligence.

Yes I am new however I seriously doubt the nose in the air is something I have done wrong, I believe there is something missing. No insult taken though.:p:p

Re: Please help

Is the motor or drive, because we still don't know what you have, trimmed down?

Re: help

a few years ago, I replaced my 70 hp with a 90 hp outboard. the 90 was 80 lbs heavier. then I added a kicker. didn't notice much of a difference while cruising, but when I was in the back pull starting the kicker, I didn't like how low my boat was in the back. So I bought 18' of fuel line, and some heavy gauge wire from an auto parts store, and moved my main battery and 2, 5 gallon gas tanks to the front of my boat, under the bow. I now use the area under my water well, which used to hold the gas tanks, as storage for life vests, and sometimes a cooler. my boat has trim/tilt, so the extra weight in the front is not an issue while cruising.

I don't know what you mean, it is an inboard 302 ford with a 270 volvo penta. I know all the wiehgt is in the rear but how do you prevent the whole front of the boat from lifting out of the water? I hope I gave you what you need.

Re: Please help

the drive is up while towing.

The bow will allways rise when comming up from ilde. It should plane out after a few seconds to a minute depending on your load.

To get on plane:
Trim the drive ALL the way down before moving the throttle from idle. Have any occupants in the boat move toward the bow to take the weight off the stern (weight in the back will slow the planing process). Push the throttle all the way foward rather quickly (not speed racer fast, but quick). As the boat hits plane ease off to a comfortable speed and reposition your guests. Then trim up accordingly to reduce the drag on your boat.

Good luck

Yes but is it down ALL the way when in the water.

Do you understand the concept of a boat being "on plane" it is quite normal for the bow(nose) to go up when taking off. After you get to a certain speed the nose will drop and this is what being "on plane" means.

Also, how fast or slow you get on plane can depend on how you manage your trim.

We have tried that but it stays up the entire time no matter what. We have been told we can put like a fin of some sort above the propeller to stop this, is there any truth to that? If so do you know what that is called?

Probably refering to a "Sting Ray" or "Whale Tale" type hydrofoil. Yes, those can help some boat attain plane faster. Although your boat (if properly loaded and running) should be able to hit plane on its own.

Re: Please help

thank you for the info.....

Anytime. I would try playing with your trim a little bit more before you buy a hydrofoil, but if you absolutely cannot get the bow down (and everything on your boat is running correctly) then give er a shot. Good luck.

I understand the concept just fine.
I'm thinking the original poster doesn't.
From his explanation it sounds like he's trying to run with the trim 3/4 up and wondering why the bow stays in the air.
