Default 1980 15HP part identification
Hello everyone.

I just bought this motor and upon getting it home and taking the cover off discovered a small piece in the lower cowl. I have a photo of the engine with the red plastic part showing. It is attached near the recoil and extends just under the flywheel. I have looked up online at the manufacturer parts site and google but can't identify. Anyone know what this is and what it does.

It was broken off and the piece was in the bottom of the lower cowl. The seller started and ran the motor for me - it seemed to run and idle fine.

Thank you all in advance,

LeeRoy Wisner calls that a "red interlock dog" in his manual: You can download it here: http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson 9.9_15.htm

The picture and description is around halfway through the pages.

I believe that the OEM part # was a "starter pawl" and would be shown on the "exhaust housing" diagram for your motor. part #391105; sea-way.com may have one.

The BRP/Evinrude site shows the part as available through their dealers: http://shop.evinrude.com/

it is a safety feature, to keep you from starting the motor in gear and with the throttle higher than start. it is not essential to the operation of the motor. but without it, you could start in forward and wide open, throw your butt over the transom.
