From Sydney, Australia

For those new to this topic, originally this topic started out as a request to find a cheap but reliable outboard motor for our scout group. See history below + additional postings for more information.

Due to the high cost of freight to Australia, it was then suggested by John Reynolds (Member #20413) that we turn this request into an Appeal for voluntary donations to purchase our Scouts a reliable 20HP outboard.

I have pledged to match all donations - Dollar for Dollar!

A PayPal email address has been set up for donations. This email address is:

david_golding@optusnet.com.au

History:

I have donated a 13' aluminium tinney to our Scout group. Now we need a cheap but reliable outboard, around 20HP. As you would be aware, the scouts are not flush with funds. Have tried the usual sources - eBay, Trading Post etc. All too expensive.

We want to teach our troops some basic water-safety skills.

Any help in acquiring a cheap but reliable outboard motor would be gratefully appreciated

Best regards,

David (Scouts)
Vice President 1st Carlingford Scouts
Sydney, Australia

PayPal email david_golding@optusnet.com.au

READ ON...

Re: PLEASE HELP: SCOUTS RUNNING OUT OF FUEL

Well, I am not a dealer so can't help you there.. but I can give you a couple of tips..

1. Don't buy from ebay, in Australia it has to many buyers and not enough sellers, which means everything ends up selling way over priced.

2. Buy one in winter, (around the next few months)
Its far far cheaper then in summer.

3. Read the saturday and sunday papers, it will have the cheapest deals there.

4. A 13 foot tinny could get away with less then 20HP, a 15 would do pretty much the same thing.

5. You should be able to pick up a reliable 15HP for around $300-$500 australian dollars or less.

hope thats of some help.

regards

Franki
Perth
Western Australia.

Re: PLEASE HELP: SCOUTS RUNNING OUT OF FUEL

Any help would be fantastic. As you are aware, the scouts do all their own fund-raising, and have very little extra money. The goal this year is to attend the 2004 Jamboree in Adelaide, which will cost each scout approx. AUS$1,400 EACH.

So there is not much left in the kitty for an outboard motor.

Hense the appeal!

Regards,

David
Vice President 1st Carlingford Scouts
Sydney, Australia

Re: PLEASE HELP: SCOUTS RUNNING OUT OF FUEL

Sounds good on paper, guys, but:

2 years ago I donated an engine to a scout troop in IL. I even paid the freight.

I had to Email the leader to get acknowledgement that it arrived. I never got the first peep of thanks.

Last year, on another site, I supported a donation drive to replace a teen's stolen engine. I got flamed as a suspected con artist who wanted to steal the money. I donated almost half of the money raised. The kid got his new engine. I never heard from him.

Any questions?

JB,

Sorry to hear you have lost the faith. I guess that's what happens when you get burned. Hopefully someone close to "Scouts" will come through with an affordable motor. Shipping from the states would be exorbitant as we all know.

I have no doubts about your credentials, Dave.

I am merely a victim of Skinners second law of human behavior: Behavior that begets bad feelings is not repeated.

I hope someone in Oz comes to your aid.

Good luck. :)

Re: PLEASE HELP: SCOUTS RUNNING OUT OF FUEL

I appologize JB. That was a very weak attempt at humor. I'm aware of your experience with the kid who's engine was stolen. I never should have posted that.

c/6

Hooty

Hi Hooty. I certainly wasn't offended, and it's good to see the great support that JB and everyone has offered.

Let's see if any boat fans in Australia can match the USA friendship and help given to date.

Cheers

David

OH NO!!! Scouts is a lawyer? Who trusts lawyers?

Just Kidding!!!

Say, Scouts, how about you open up a Paypal account for donations? Shoot, I might kick in a few U.S. dollars for some scouts. It might all ad up if several people kick in.

Re: PLEASE HELP: SCOUTS RUNNING OUT OF FUEL

Greetings all. Unfortunately (or fortunately as the case may be) I am not a lawyer, otherwise I would purchase a new 20HP outboard out of my loose change (apologies to any lawyers on this forum).

What is a Paypal account (sounds almost Vatican!)?

Cheers

Dave
