Thats the upper part of your stern drive. You can buy a new one from SEI and either replace just the upper (~$800), or the entire drive (~$1,600). When was the last time you had the drive off for maintenance? While the drive is off, you should at least inspect impeller, gimbal bearing, bellows, etc., and replace as needed.

Thank you, Would some one with basic mechanics be able to do this? Or take it to a marine mechanic?

Do you have any idea why this would crack? And is there a temporary solution instead of replacing?

it looks like the drive hit something hard.

there is no temporary solution short of pulling it apart and welding it, then machining it.

Hit something hard or it froze.-----Can be welded.----But can not be welded correctly to maintain alignment of precision parts.---That housing would be distorted.

IDK, might try welding it up..... nothing inside there. Oil passage on other side. No pic of the port side. All of starboard. Worse that happens, eats itself and has to buy both upper and lower.

If you have a good understanding of how to change things on an automobile and can follow written directions, yes you could.

Depending on the boats value, might I suggest you look into a good used stern drive?

I'm wondering if that is freeze damage from a ton of water in the drive... if that is the case, welding isn't going to do anything, the drive (upper and lower) is done for.

Welcome to iBoats. Just say no to crack :ROFLMAO: . . .

As the others have said . . . got to be fixed and dis-assmbly would be the right thing to do to see if it can be fixed rather than replaced.

Since the boat has been in your possession for a year, do you recall any instances of impact while either boating or trailering the boat? Knowing that may be helpful. Or perhaps it was there (as a smaller, less visible crack) when you bought the boat

If you decide to rebuild it yourself, even if you just replace the housing, read the manuals and study the specialized tools needed to properly set up the drive on re-assembly. You might change your mind about DIY.

Ayuh,..... It'll have to be torn apart, to make that determination,........

I saw the point of contact, just above center of the bullet, on drod's,.....
Caved it in pretty good,....
But, he could possible have considerably more, yet unseen , damage,.....

Agreed looks like there is a vertical crack just in-front of water pick up holes, but that is usually from freeze damage and clogged drain holes

Down on the bottom of the case is where the shifting mech is and with that dent I doubt it will be any good. You need another complete drive.

Tear it apart but pray first. If no internal damage, any good TIG welder should be able to fix.

I'd probably MIG pretty hot the big crack across the middle 1/2, then TIG the ends. Reason being the MIG will go on fast and pull the crack together. When finished I'd just leave the weld bead without any grinding.

With a hit that hard, the drive needs to be pulled down and inspected before any repairs. At that point it's cheaper to buy an SEI drive complete.

Everything else, including gimbal ring, bell housing and gimbal housing needs to be very closely inspected. Also the transom may have sustained damage so that will need to be examined by someone who knows what they are looking for....

This is not going to be a cheap exercise.
