PLease Help, Dont no where to STart

Hi I just got what I beleve to be a 1955 Johnson 25 or 30 Hp outboard motor from a freind who says its been sitting in the barn for 20 + years. I am trying to find exact year and Hp the cover says 30 but I can not find any info with the numbers I have ( Model # RD-170 ) ( Serial # 1273102 ) Please Help . Also I plan on using motor for 15 foot fishing boat for me and 5 yr old son, what are some of the first things to do to get this old girl runnnig again. I am very good at fixing things but have never ever wrenched on a boat motor thanks for your time...

The first thing you need to do is read a couple threads that i will post below for you, read them, and then get back to us with your findings. A manual will also be your best friend. Gl

RD-17 is a 1955 25hp. The 30 was only made one year, 1956. So somebody has done a switcheroo with either the model number plate or the hood. 1955 was green, 1956 was maroon.

Expect to find bad coils in that motor. They all are. They have new ones here at iboats.
