So today i purchased a 1975 mercury 200 20hp. Motor started right up and seemed to be in good running condition. I brought it home and that is when the problem started. Some how, not sure how it happened too fast when i set the motor on a stand and started to turn away, it fell onto the concrete. It fell straight down, landing on the prob. Luckily it doesn’t look like it suffered much damage. The shift lever is broken, the prop cap is broken, and the prop shaft is bent. The prop itself doesn’t look damaged. But there is no way to use the prop end cap with this prop. Not sure if the end cap needs to be on or not. The main issue is the bent shaft. I am having a hard time finding one, and the instructions on how to replace it. Can anyone help? Thanks

I would look for a parts engine. Call some boat shops in your area, and ask them if they know of any place who may have a boneyard. Post on your local buy and sell groups that you're "iso" in search of a lower unit for this particular engine. Find a good website with parts diagrams, and part numbers to compare. Search
e-bay for used.

Prop is bad. Gearcase is OK to use, except for bent propshaft.

It will be a real PIA to replace the propshaft, if you can find one for reasonable cost. Much easier to find a used gearcase and swap 'em.

Not sure what you mean by shift lever broker.

It is the plastic lever used to change from in gear to neutral.

How badly is it bent ?----Should be easy to change a good ( not bent ) propshaft.---Or have your local machine shop straighten it ?------Find one and ask how to change it

I think i found a couple on ebay, not sure if they will fit or not. $50-100 price range. Can’t find a gear box that will fit yet. Found one that might fit, but $300, which is really more then i want to spend. I didn’t pay much more than that for the motor. I got this because it was close, in my price range, and didn’t need anything but to be mounted on my boat. It sucks i broke it. I hate it when i cause my own problems. I really don’t have time to work on a project motor. That is why i bought one ready to use. :(

It is bent pretty bad. I could try to straighten it. I doubt i could get it straight enough to use, but maybe enough to get it out

I know the one i have just had the water pump impeller replaced and new seals and stuff on the bottom. The owner got it from his grandfather and has always changed oil ect.. and kept it well maintained.

What prop should i be looking for? Mine was a 2 blade. I don’t know what pitch it is. Should i look for a 2,3,or 4 blade prop? Looks like mine is a 8 or 9 spline (i’ll count when i get home) Just not sure what i need. Thanks

Is the water pump in the with the gearbox? I found one a little over 3 hours from me, motor needs rebuilt, but gear box is good. He doesn’t know what condition the water pump is in because it has been setting for 3 years. It was rebuilt before that. I know my water pump is good. Just trying to figure this out. I don’t know anything about boat motors.

Finding a Gearcase from another engine would be a good idea. As I think the current case is going to give you trouble with Exhaust Gases getting out and interfering with the prop's grip. Also the Nut securing the Rear Bearing Carrier has to be unscrewed from the area that broke off, coming out shouldn't be a problem, but getting the Nut back in uncrossthreaded might be a challenge
As for the Water pumps. Always replace the Impeller if you don't know the History of the current one, otherwise every 3 or 4 years
