Placing a spring in a 1975 Johnson Control Box?????

How do i place the spring with the ball in this thing?? I use a flat head to hold it down but it always comes off? Any help would be helpful....

You have to have the shift & throttle plate installed in the side cover first. Then put in the ball & spring and install the cover that holds it in. Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the diagram of your control.
