Today I bought all the materials to put together a pipe clamp bench vise,...otherwise known as a Moxon Face Vice. Ive purchased the 3/4 pipe clamps and pipe, red oak 2x6 for the face and vise, and Ive devised a release mechanism that I will reveal upon assembly. It will look like the pictures blow except I'll have red oak on both sides of the vise, and a release lever to compress the two button without having to reach under the bench. The work begins tomorrow, I will post pics here of the progress.

Not letting me upload pics

The only thing I remember about using the sliding pipe clamps is the holding/ release tabs slip unless you take a file to the pipe and ruff it up a bit, get the shine off of it.

3/4" pipe will require a 1 1/8 bore bit to allow for the pipes to slide easily. I purchased (1) 4' long piece of 3/4" black pipe, cut into (2) 24" pieces. With a double 2x6 on the underside of the bench, (2) more 2x6's on the outside, and (2) pcs of 3/4" red oak for jaws,.and allowance for clamps, should yield a decent amount of jaw opening.

The finished length came out to 10 3/4" jaw separation. So far its coming along good.

Interesting concept there shaw520. Two thing pop into my mind. First, it looks like pine wood instead of red oak. But I can't really tell without being there. Secondly, I realize ingenuity is great and you came up with a different concept for such a vice using 3/4" black pipe. and clamps but when you add up the cost of the all the materials you used, wouldn't it have been cheaper to buy such a wood vice and install? IDK :noidea:

When i went pricing a decent bench vise i was surprised how expensive they are, $120-150 for a 5" swivel vise. Thats exactly what inspired me to build my own.
4' pc of red oak for the jaws - $7
4' pc of threaded pipe - $10
(2) pipe clamps $16
(1) 2x6 - $5
Total -$38
Time working in garage - priceless lol.

I also like that this type of vise doesnt take up any bench space, and at 24" wide by 10" deep, i beleive it'll be much more versatile that an ordinary bench top type..time shall tell,..and i love diy projects, the self satisfaction level is higher!

Oh gm280, i forgot to mention the 2x6's are spruce, (4) total, (2) under the bench and (2) for the vise, and the jaw surfaces are 3/4" red oak.

Final touches,.. For the release lever I started off using a piece of 1/8" x 1 1/2" flat stock,... but it didnt seem stable enough, so I found a piece of 1/2" round stock in the garage that worked awesome !

And one final picture of the underneath to get a better idea of the materials used.... I used the vise today to build some shelves and I must say Im very pleased with it,... I'll be drilling some 1" hole in the bench for dogs (dowels) to clamp larger pieces.

shaw520, very interesting setup. If it works, go for it. Just be very careful with that bar sticking out that you don't have to change you name and gender after interfering with it.
