Picture of your test-tank

I'm building a new test tank for testing outboard, probably in aluminium to replace my old rusty tub that begin to leak

​I.m curious to see some pictures for give some ideas .

​I whant to know if possible, the size, shape and what size of motor you can run.

​Do you have Inside baffle ? Any sugestions whil be apreciate.

​Its for Inside my garage for portable outboard up to 25-30 HP

2' x4' x 2' deep. $75 at any farm supply type store.

have used with up to 115 hp motors

I have a plywood cover that fits over half of it.
I only run the motors at idle when in gear.

Moons back used to test, flush portable OB's on a wooden stand while lower leg sat inside barrel, just good for slow, fast idle runs at neutral. There's a lower spout on lower barrel to discard oily water nicely. Once done simply pivot OB up and remove barrel from lower leg.



Now use only muffs as OB lives bolted on transom...

Whit mine i can run a 25 hp in full throttle whit minimum splashing ,For mi new i think to change the desing a little whit round corners.

i whill show you picture when my new be completed.

My new test-tank is nearly finish.

Some adjustments to do but i can use it now.

That is absolutely awesome.
Most of us make do with something cheap, for the few hours a year that we need a tank.
You obviously have some shop skill. And will make use of the tank.

I bet the rest of your shop is equally fabulous.

My neighbord is a very good welder, and he make my new test tank whit my sp?cifications. Theres many small features we dont' see in the vid?o but that make the difference .

​I'm of the ones that think that work whit the right Tools or Equipment make the life easy !

The rest of my shop is just and very old 20'x30' garage, but i admit i like and have lots of Tools.

Testing an outboard in a tank is good for some things.
But for testing at wide open you also need test wheels for each type of motor.
​Running an outboard in a tank at wide open without a test wheel the motor won't get the same results.

The test wheel is designed to simulate the thrust/drag that the motor and boat get on the lake and allow better water intake than the regular prop does in a tank. Since the regular prop can't get a bite in the tank it tends to over rev the motor. Different motors require different wheels so make sure you get the one for your motor. OMC would use the wheels in their test tanks which are something like 3x3x5 feet or so and hold several hundred gallons of water. Not exactly a large tub or 55 gallon drum. The test wheel can be helpful but you still need to fine tune WOT on the boat in the lake.

Some test tank like Motor Speciality have Inside baffle system so they can use without test prop.

My previous test tank have square corners and a kind an Inside baffle to load the motor (sometimes to much especialy for smaller kickers) and simulate motor running on a boat. wWhit experience and the engine orienting a certain way, is running that i can test tiller portable engines , in many case without, test on a boat.

​For My new test tank, i change the shape whith round corner and try my first wihtout baffle. But now i need to add a baffle system because engine tend to over-rev, i'm thinking make a system of adjustable bafflle that i will use whit the help of the RPM on the back wall of my test-tank for testint many portable outboards.

​The problem whith test prop is they are very very expensive , in some case only one test prop cost more than 800$ .......I can't buy one for every make and models, is very to expensive for me.

​Mercury give some instruction for turning some standard propeller into test prop, by reduce the outside diameter a certain way.

Whit the help ok my friend (a welder) we buid this motor dollys........The dolly have about the same angle as a boat transom. that permit to lift the outboard for remove the lower unit and stay stable, and that permit the outboard to be at level to check o?l on a 4 strokes.

​We use wheels from an old snothrower and old small casters in the front. the tool plate are cake pan (2$) some peace of old iron tubing.

3x aluminum plate about 670 $for the 3, give the roud shape about 200$ in a sp?cialisez shop ,110 volts winch for the hoist about 150$, the rest is re-use of iron peace.

​+ labor and welding


I don't pay any labor is trading time

​But if to make build in a welding shop i figure about 2500$-3000$ cnd
