He everyone, I know we all like to see pics of our boats in progress so here are a few of mine. Finished the cable steering rehab today and all I need is a flywheel for the 1970 Johnson 40 and I will be in the water for its maiden voyage! 2012-08-05_17-02-38_973.jpg2012-08-05_17-02-18_829.jpg2012-08-05_17-01-48_842.jpg2012-08-05_17-02-59_218.jpg2012-08-05_17-03-19_795.jpg

Here are a few more. Still need to redo the seats but the way the previous owner attached them to the floor should work at the moment. 2012-08-05_17-03-28_73.jpg2012-08-05_17-03-43_912.jpg2012-08-05_17-14-16_393.jpg

I know! I asked the PO if he was building a deck in there. It will work for now but I would like to build original style boxes eventually.

Well I finally got her in the water yesterday on the Erie Canal. I was quite pleased with it although I really couldnt run it too fast because of the 5mph limit on the canal. It seemed to feel real solid and was a pleasure to drive. A few tweaks on the old Johnson and it should be about perfect. Off to the Adirondacks camping and some nice lakes this week with boat in tow!

Will certainly get some. Looking forward to getting out on a glass smooth mountain lake in the morning and just cruising!

1964 Niagara with a 1970 Johnson 40hp. I only have 3 seats but not sure if they are the fun n sun ones or not because I thought they would have a support that folded down on the back when it was reclined? I would like to find 1 more as the 3 I have are in almost like new condition. When I get back out I will get some pics for you.

Yep it should have back supports for when it,s folded down. Maybe someone recovered them and did not re install the supports..
Have fun on the lake!

Well we just got back from vacation up in the Adirondack Mountains of NY and I am happy to report the ole' MFG did great! I had a blast running around the lake with it and topped out at 22 mph. A slight adjustment of the low idle needle and it was running like a sewing machine. I expected a little better performance out of the 40hp Johnson as my Dads 14ft Mirro Craft with a late model 15hp Yamaha was a touch faster at 24mph but the MFG is heavier. Caught alot of fish from it, pulled my wife and mother in law on the tube with it and just cruised too. Now to finish the seats, put a windshield on it and just kind of button it back up and its gonna be a nice little craft. SPHELPS there are the pics you were looking for too, I think thats what you need right?

So, I was noticing your canvas..... My windshield has a reverse lip groove in it to retain a top without snaps, and it looks like yours is the same AND has a top/canvas installed. Do you have a couple close-ups of this?

I have never seen what Gramp MFG intended for this although I have seen quite a number of Niagaras with snaps installed on the windshield frame (I hate things that stick out of an otherwise smooth, clean surface.) It seems to show the top retainer groove in use here: yer photo but there is no close u pfor me to get a visual. Might just be a tarp??

Thanks! Loved the read on your vacation BTW

Mark, The windshield doesnt have snaps, it has those twist things that you put into an oval hole in the canvas and twist it 90 degrees to secure it. Not sure what you call those type of fasteners though. The canvas top is in pretty poor shape but I just wanted to see what it looked like and if it was salvageable. I cant even see thru my windshield and need a new one so I didnt mess with it any more than that until I get a new windshield. Maybe then I might have the local canvas shop make a new one for me.

243198_4598781092771_30228962_o.jpg Here is a pic from tonight in Buffalo. Stopped at Canalside for ice cream with the kiddos in Buffalo harbor. USS Sullivans is in the background. Really enjoying this owning a functional boat thing!

Nice looks like you had the place to yourself..
BTW , Thanks for the pics of the seat hardware ! That really helps me out !
Been busy the last few days surfing a ground swell from a storm going up the coast down here so I have not been on the forum for a few days. Glad to see you out enjoying your MFG !!

Re: top fastners

Those are Dzus buttons. Race car stuff to me but I guess they have more applications for small planes. Invented in northern Europe.

thank you for the info!

Re: top fastners

Congrats on your "new-to-you" boat! Good pics so thanks for sharing! Those seats definitely look like they were designed to fold flat so that's a huge bonus. I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard to fabricate so supports on the sides that fold flat when they're upright. Adds a lot of versatility.
