Just got a boat from my dad....needed a few things done to it.. Got most of them done and took it for its 1st test run this past weekend. The boat did good for about half the day.. then it started having problems. I had to pump the fuel ball every time we stopped....or it wouldnt start. It would idle and take off fine..then at cruizing speed it acts like its starving for gas.. So to get us back in..i had the ol lady pumping the ball every minute or so to keep it pumped up... My ? is... I know this to me sounds like a fuel pump problem...How do i test it to see if its working?

Also..I have looked all over the internet and tried to find where to get the model number from so i can order new parts if needed... and all the numbers I have found dont match up to suggestions...

I took some pics today to see if someone can help me id the year model...(and yes..i will be doing alot of motor cleaning ...hehe)

Have you looked for any numbers on the port side stern bracket towards the top? The numbers you have make no sense to me. Maybe somebody else will chime in here.

Is there any way you could have some kind of blockage in the air vent? Meaning it is building up a vacuum in the gas tank and then starving it of gas? Try removing the gas tank cap next time and see if it runs any better then>

Call the manufacturer at 847-689-7090. Open until 4:30 CST. They will look it up for you. Tell them your serial number is R8214350 (from your welch plug pic) and they will tell you your model and year. Although I think that the R stands for a warranty replacement powerhead?

red valve is primer solenoid. You can manually turn the valve to squirt fuel to the carbs to try and improve startup. Do NOT leave the red lever oriented 90degrees from the pump body...it will free-flow excess fuel. The solenoid is also run by the key switch which you can push in repeatedly to squirt fuel into the carbs (so you shouldn't have to touch the red lever if the key switch is working). If you push the key switch with the cowl off you should be able to hear the solenoid pump click. The round stamped number on the top beginning with "R" indicates its a remanufactured or replacement head like archcycle indicated, but as far as replacement parts are concerned bernd is correct and you can look up 1989 or 1991 90HP parts to repair pretty much anything on the engine as those two years are nearly identical. Do you have a fuel/water separator? If so, check for water in the fuel b/c your symptoms are somewhat indicative of 1) misbehaving fuel pump, 2) contaminated fuel, or 3, vapor lock in fuel tank which britchflee mentioned above. All are common problems. Lastly, I highly recommend you have a professional make sure your VRO (oil injection) pump is operating properly. (black pump in top left of fifth picture). If not, it can completely ruin your engine in short order.

To add to ryguy1101's red lever things- it's used to make rope starting the motor easier because it free flows gas in.

The R first character on the welch plug number means replacement head. So it's not the original powerhead for the motor. Usually there's a stamped metal tag on the side of the motor or mounting bracket starting with a J (for Johnson or E for evinrude). If you can see that, it will tell you the year, hp, and feature set of the motor.

thanks for all the info!! gonna do some trouble shooting this weekend!

as for the oiling...just to make sure...i put a lil oil in the gas.... due to the boat setting for a while and not knowing if the oiling system worked... but it was smoking pretty good as if it was gettting oil...

Okay during trouble shooting today...every thing seems to be working fine. Except for when I pulled the fuel/water filter off....I poured the gas out of it into a clear container, and holy crap! It looked like brown paint. And after letting it set for a few minutes, the bottom was covered with sludge from the gas...and this is only what i poured out..no telling whats still in the filter. So im guessing this had something to do with the problem..
I checked all the fuel/vent lines..and there free flowing...

SO..... gonna change the filter this week sometime, and take it back out for a test run friday...

Heres the crap gas.... My next ? is... I mixed oil with the gas....shouldnt it be a blue green color??

Also..keep in mind, I took the gas tank out, and cleaned it out with a cleaner solvent.... and then let the water hose run in it for about 6 hours to flush it out ( i forgot i had left the hose on..) and then let it dry upside down for a week...

Wow that could have something to do with it.. I bet your lines are sludgy too. Buy a can of Sea Foam fuel system cleaner and run it through with your next tank. And yes it should be blue green.
