See post #10
i did see that post , yes i agree it is "showing as" running slightly lean, retarded timing can appear to show lean or rich symptoms on plugs and valve heads.
OP posted that after running for a bit it picks up , this is because the cylinder temp are probably getting to a point of being excessive and it is probably cleaning the plugs..

as i posted I'm no xpurt as i have only been hands on for 40+ years playing with and diagnosing V8 motors.

incorrect timing causes incorrect fuel burn.

I have found jets from tripower as suggested. I'm going to order them and also check float height when I pull it apart. Is there much sense taking it.out if it's bogging out. I don't want to flood out in the middle of the ocean lol

Ayuh,..... Runnin' lean, don't cause flooding,.....
But,....
It can lead to burnt valves, 'n holes in pistons, from detonation,.....

Everytime I hear the word detonation I panick and think I've done damage to my new engine. Its never pinged hard or have any odd smells or gotten hot. I will run these jets and do a plug check

I haven't had boat out but after changing those jets I just went to run boat and I had to prime my carb...seems the float bowl was empty. ?

Possible. If I leave my boat for a couple days the Edlebrock is pretty much empty

It's never happened to me like this before
Next time you have it running , shut it off, leave throttle wide open so you can see down manifold. Watch it after it is shut off and see if gas drips into manifold. Even if the gas in the fuel line drained back the carb would still be full...so would think you'd see it in the manifold if carb as dribbling out

I'm not sure I get what you meen
well you inspected the ignition timing look it up ... around 1100 rpm and then use the timing . did your engine and use the ignition timing ..........
also those carbs are new and those parts are in the carb defective parts.

my engine merc 470 is the spec manual merc OEM 8 deg ... then the gasoline changed it ,,,, of the merc updating it 6 deg timing ... OEM UPDATED IT..1978-1985 YEARS 470 ENGINE ..

Here's something odd.....took boat out today...took off fine....and I anchored and fished....about an hour and I started boat and it was uneven idle and had no jam to get going. I pulled the cap...rotor..and the springs looked stretched abit....I put new springs in and away I went no problem...what makes that happen...that's twice

also you did the dist cap and the components in the cap .. then do the engine timing ..inspect it ..
looks like the rotor and the cap cleaned it ///..
