Points wear out gradually and then you typically replace them annually( At least I did). Pertronix units fail and leave you stranded.

I guess I've been lucky I replaced my points with a pertronix(89 omc 3 ltr).I've put on over 80 hrs no problems.I do keep the points in the boat just in case.

I put in the Pertronix system and have had good results also. No problems soooo farrr. But now that I say that you know what will happen the next time I go out. Better put my old points in the boat!

The Pertronix unit must see 12 volts to work properly. It can't be wired in AFTER the ballast resistor, if you use a non-internal resistor coil. The ground must be on the negative terminal of the coil.

most Pertronix problems are caused by incorrect connection.

Re: Pertronix failure...

Typical Pertronix...I have now removed more defective ones than I have installed as I don't recommend them anymore. What a half-baked POS. Keep the points, save a tow!

I ran points for many years. I used to change them out every 3 years, or sooner if I saw that the engine was not running smoothly. Corrosion was my biggest enemy.

Twenty years ago my mechanic suggested that I switch to Pertronics. He told me he had put them in his Dad's boat and his as well and was real happy with the performance. So, I switched. I ran them for 20 years with not even a hiccup or a hint of a misfire.

Earlier this year I read on the internet (that's my problem, I sometimes read things and it makes me wonder!!!) that Pertronics units had a short life and may need to be replaced periodically, and there are many many problems with them. So, just to be on the safe side, and based on what I read on this forum, I bought a new unit.

I was due for a complete outdrive service and tune-up anyway, so I called my mechanic and scheduled an appt. to have him come to the house. When he arrived I gave him the new ignition unit and we lined up what else he was to do to the boat. He was shocked that I wanted to replace the Pertronics. He said he has been putting them in boats for almost 30 years and never had one single failure, with literally hundreds installed. He said many of the boats he works on are now in their 3rd ownership, the old owners just pass along his contact info.

Anyway, after much discussion he reluctantly agreed to replace the unit. So, now I have taken my old points out of my toolbox, and replaced them with my 20 year old Pertronics as my backup spare. I looked at the olld points and boy were they corroded....guess i forgot about them....LOL.

So, what I'm curious about is how some people can NEVER have a problem, and others have TOO MANY problems.

Re: Pertronix failure...

I too have installed pertronix for ages on old points distributors ...never had an issue ......cheap priced too ....

points dwell vary with rpm ,corosion, wear , etc...
the negative result being in , vriabale timing =fuel consumption ,power, torque ....

pertronix give the same signal all the time ! no variation ( at least one thing you dont have to worry about)
