Hi all,
I'm hoping this finds its way to someone who knows a little something about the Pennsylvania area. Mom and I are planning a trip next summer to the Pennsylvania area. We want to see Philadelphia and visit the Amish Country for sure. I don't know where to stay. Timeshare options are as follows: Lake Harmony, White Haven, Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pocono Manor, Bushkill and Hawley. We also have New Jersey options: Atlantic City and Vernon Valley. My question is which place would you prefer spending a week of your time. We aren't the type to sit around and love to learn and see new places. Thank you for any help you can give us.

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

Bassy, I am familiar with every single one of those places. I live in an area close to most of it. I would split the time and stay at a couple different places if you can.. Philadelphia is OK for one day. You can see independence hall and the liberty bell, and go to south street and enjoy the Italian market, all doable in a day.

The Amish country (Lancaster county) is very interesting. Just some of the town names are cool. Like bird in hand, blue ball, climax, and a few others. You will definitely see Amish in their buggy's and see them working the fields with horse teams. Lots of tourist traps in the area. Some great places to eat out there . "Yoders" is a good one.

The time share options you mentioned are bit more north of Lancaster county and Philly. White haven is a small mountain town. The Lehigh river runs just about right through it. They offer some whitewater rafting trips in the area. Right down the road is Hickory run state park. It is a real nice park with some good hiking trails. Other than that White haven is just an average mountain town. A few bars and good place to eat by the name of "Hannas ugly mug" You would be close to the Turnpike and Rt. 80.

Not real far from White Haven is Lake Harmony. It is a resort area and offers a lake for fishing and they do outside concerts in the summer, There are more shops and touristy things to do in that area. Lots of Vacation homes in there, and some nice places to eat. My Mom waitressed at the Split Rock lodge when she was just a kid. There are a couple ski slopes nearby that offer things to do in the summer.

Shawnee on the Big D is another resort area. Traffic can be a bear along that stretch of 209 in the summer. But there is lots of nice nature areas set aside along the Delaware river. The Delaware water gap national recreation area comes to mind. Bushkill is also in this general area. Again some parks and nice scenery along with Bushkill falls. Nice area.

Hawley is farther north along Rt.6 next to lake wallenpaupack. Most of the recreation in this area is geared toward the lake and boating. The lake is decent size but gets absolutely nuts on the weekends. You will find a scattering of antique shops and such around , but once you get away from the lake there aint much around.

I have spent plenty of time at all those places, after all it is my neck of the woods. I find all these areas very beautiful and have had some good times. It would be hard for me to choose because I really dont know exactly what you guys are looking to do. I think I would get bored at any of those places after a few days.

A day in Philly, a couple, maybe one two days in the Lancaster area and a few days up north would be a great vacation for you.

Good luck and if you have any questions I would be glad to try and help.

Oh and Atlantic city,, The place is a dump once you get away from the casino. I would not want to spend a week there. but thats just me.:)

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

Split Rock at Lake Harmony is the nicest - if you are staying at the condos anyway ... they are very nice and roomy. The Lodge isn't as nice as the condos.

Shawnee isn't as nice and as FLATHEAD mentioned, the road is full of traffic.

Lancaster is a bit south of these places, but is awesome to see and visit. You can spend several days in Lancaster and Berks County. If you like theatre, Sight and Sound is a must! The productions they do there are second to none! There are lots of Amish farms to view and lots to do.

There is also a fair amount to do in Philly, but it has been a few years since I have been there and need to do a trip again ... my youngest is about the right age to go there and she LOVES history. So, probably next summer we will spend some time there.

More to the middle of the southern side of the State is Gettysburg ... this is a must see ... especially for a school teacher. As you walk on that hallowed ground you will be awestruck. You have a day there.

There is enough historyin PA to keep you busy, and plenty of State parks and water for your fill of that. If you want any other info, let us know ... we will try to help.

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

FLATHEAD and Aspeck, this is great information.
A timeshare is one place you work out of for the whole 7 days, so staying in a few places is not an option. Nice suggestion though.
Aspeck, yes, Gettysburg is great. We saw it when we were in Washington DC a few years ago. Might have to do that again. The driving tour and the whole experience just helps you take in all that happened there. Our history... It's so important to try to understand what it took and continues to take to keep us United and free. It helps me help my students to understand.
Must discuss these things with Mom and decide what to do.
Thanks again,
Bassy

I went through PA several weeks ago. I didn't get to take in any of the attractions, but it sure was a pleasure just taking in the country side. It truly is a beautiful state. Enjoy your trip...............SS

Yes, LF, Hershey Park and the Hershey Factory are a little over an hours drive from Split Rock (Lake Harmony). And don't forget Cabelas in Hamburg. Bushkill Falls is a fun day of hiking also, and very close ... and Pocono Raceway.

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

Bassy, That is a fairly broad overview I gave to you. Once you pinpoint a date , Maybe we can clue you in to some of the happenings in the area. The stuff that is not as well known as the big touristy things. Right now Musikfest is going on in Bethlehem/ Easton area, runs for a week. Very entertaining Great time there. I'll be heading there tomorrow night..,,, http://www.musikfest.org/ We also have a few "Redneck festivals" That are a great time. Not to mention river festivals, all kinds of stuff. Once you get a date we can get you set up for some fun, as well as seeing the well known sites.

Since we got some time here I will put ya on some nice areas. As most know i deal with the Amish both in Pa. and Ohio. Northern Ohio has the largest settlement but PA area is the best. check the internet out and keep in touch. I think you still have email. I will do some checking with my builders in PA>

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

All that was mentioned is true. I live about 25miles east of Hawley, and there's not really much to see except a few antique shops, if you blink your eyes you're through it (it's that small a town) but, just before there, is a big beautiful powerboat lake (Wallenpaupak), but aside from a few restaurants, and a scenic view of the lake, it has no other redeeming values except to boaters like myself. If you're just touristing, I'd pass, and go on to the better places mentioned. I know I'm a bit biased, but coming from an ex-Long Islander Pa. is scenically Beautiful, and we have Big turkeys, & small deer, everywhere ;)

Thanks to everyone for the input. Looks like we're looking at Lake Harmony. Its a couple hours drive from Lancaster and Philly, but those will just have to be drive in and out same day excursions.
I took a look at the Muskifest website. Man do you get some entertainment! Boston! My all time favorite.... More than a feeling... love that song! And John Fogerty! Hubby's all time favorite! Awesome music!
Before this message gets buried here is my e-mail address if anyone thinks of anything else. linda_8866@yahoo.com

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

I live in Vernon Valley, DON'T GO THERE, DULL AS ALL GET OUT. except for lots of golf. Its a suburban bed room community.
I own at Shawnee on the Del, That would be my choice of a time share for a Pocono vacation, its central to the national water gap park, two hour ride to NYC or Philadelphia. You can fly into Newark or Scranton. or Philly. Tangalwood will put you on a lake walenpalpack a major lake for the north east.
I guess a lot depend on if you seek a "country or urban vacation. I don't like Atlantic city, the time shares there were disappointing.
Atlantic city will put you at the jersey shore , and you can go south 20 mile to some of the best beach community, destinations on the east coast.
how old are your family members. and your interest. feel free to email for more info.

Hot, humid and very sweaty in the summer. Be sure to take your salt tablets and extra towels. You will need two of them after a shower in the late afternoon/evening. One to dry off after the shower and the other to dry off after you brush your teeth.(sweat)

Most likely more places have AC than when I was there in 1964, but it was miserable, especially coming from So Cal.

Your kidding right? The Jersey shore is more or less a dump. You know something is wrong when you are standing in 6 inches of water and cant see your toes. IMHO Jersey has the worst beach communitys of the east coast. Dirt, pollution, high prices, thugs, crowds. You have to go south to at the very least the Delmarva, to get into some nice area.

Flathead, you have no idea of what your talking about. I don't care what you have to say in your defense, and I don't want to hear it. You are just plain wrong regardless of whatever you may think or say. And I'll leave it at that.

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

that's the old jersey shore, not that i like the shore, we have open fishing the water is clear, dolphins play in the schrewberry bay, shut down boating a lot this July. too much tourist dollars.
Atlantic city is a hour away from Philadelphia and 3 hours to NYC, I would imagine that to travel from S Cal, Atlantic city or the Poconos isnt going to do it. The Big Apple and Philadelphia metro gets my fancy, but I live in the Jersey side of the Pocies, highlands of NJ and pushing 60.

"Philadelphia is OK for one day. You can see independence hall and the liberty bell, and go to south street and enjoy the Italian market, all doable in a day."

I disagree with that. Sure it is possible to see Philly in one day, but you definitely will not get bored if you have to spend more than a day there. There's so much history there, and lots of cool historic places. Also, if you want more than just history there is still a lot to do in Philadelphia. I don't know if you are interested in art at all, but if so, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a must see.

Re: Pennsylvania Trip 2009

Wow, this thread got a little heated while I was away, heh? That was unexpected.
I appreciate all your replies, but decided that this wasn't a good trip for a timeshare. We'll do it staying in hotels another year so we can see more and spend more time in the places we do see.
So, we put in for San Antonio,TX, Washington State, San Francisco and New Orleans. We'll see which timeshare we get to exchange with. All would be new for me and lots to see.
Hey, there may be a Bassy coming to your neighborhood in summer '09. You be good now ya hear? LOL!
Happy TGIF! Finally!
