I have been servicing and fixing my downriggers over the past few days and at this point I have 6 good working ones. 2 Cannon mag15s and 4 Penn 825s.
I rebuilt all the motors and everything works fine.
I would like your ideas and preferences between Cannon and Penn and why you have these opinions so I can make a better informed decision as to which 2 I should put on my boat next year. Thank you.

Made the Cannon to Penn comparison when I bought a pair for my boat a few years back

Ended up with a pair of Cannon Mag 10.
Fishing in saltwater, I liked the extendable boom and fewer metal components to corrode.

Thank you Dingbat for that info.
My preference goes toward the Penn Fathom masters and what made me favor those is the circuit board. This is probably because I am a tinkerer. I managed to find the problem on one of the circuit boards and managed to fix it. Needless to say, I felt good about that. But working on that board I also discovered that it has 2 on and off switches, one to the side of the rigger cover and the other one with the possibility to actually have it on the dash board. As far as I can see this switch works like a solenoid switch and not as a 12 volt feed. This enables me to raise the rigger from the dash when I approach shallower water. No need to run to the back off the boat. I hooked it up with a momentary three way switch. Did anybody ever use those ,or were they just forgotten because everybody got so used to only have the switch on the rigger? Or is there a very valid reason why those switches are not used

Got me on the switches….
The only electric feature I use is “short stop”. An auto retrieve function that stops the ball at the surface since rough seas, gelcoat and #20 balls don’t play well together
