I have a 1991 Johnson 48 SPL that will pee plenty on the hose but when I put it in a trash can, no water comes out the tell tale. New motor to me. Water tube and water intake are free of debris.

thanx

In the trashcan the water level needs to be about 4" above the seam between the lower unit and the midsection. If you ran it without water getting to the impellor you probably ruined the impellor. Its cooled and lubricated with the water it pumps.

I ran it with the water level right at the seam; a few inches above the water intake ports but apparently not high enough. I ran it 3 times for about 20 seconds with a rest in between.

If the impellor is bad would it pee while attached to a hose but not while in water? Should I try to fill the trash can higher with water?

thanx

The impeller is above the seam. Fill it up a few inches above the seam....It may pee on the muffs even if the impeller is weak, because you are forcing water through the system with the water pressure...

Filled the trash can to the top and now she pees! I will replace the impeller anyway as it might have been damaged and who knows how old it is. Thanx guys! You made my day.
