holes at the base of the top part of the engine that used to spit some water out now has a light smoke coming out and no water. Also smoke is coming out of the prop area. I can't tell if the engine is running hot but I shut it off because I've never noticed the engine do this before I did not want to take a chance. The engine is a Mercury 90 HP and about 15 years old. By the way I noticed this when I was flushing out the engine after running it all day. Can someone tell me if I have a problem??? Thanks!!

Hello SouthGa:
Sounds like to me you have a bad thermostat. But before going there, when was the last time you changed the water pump impeller? If more than 2 years then do that first...best wait for the more experienced guys to answer ya.
I thought I would give you a better reply than "yes...you have a problem " :D

Good luck-
Bobby

If youve tried to 'kick' it a little in nuetral to draw up a pee steam and still get nothing, i would vote on the impellar also. When you were on the water at high rpms you created enough suction for 'pee'. I would not run it without diagnosing and fixing.

You've got a restriction or a weak water pump (impeller). The two exhaust relief ports will only spew water at elevated rpm's (2000 and up) yet you should not have steam.

Change the pump.

It is basic maintenance time...change the impeller....by the way, if this is a 6cyl motor it has no thermostat.

I have a prediction to make. You will find the impeller intact, but it will be "trained" into the shape of the housing.
ODDD1 and Bobby are right,it's just time to do it.The reason I make that prediction, is the symptom you described,of having some flow at higher RPMs, ziltch or very little at idle. And pat yourself on the back for a good job of catching it before it did any damage to your engine.
