Re: peanut butter

Here's how I do it...

Peanut Butter

Start by mixing your resin.

Then add Cabosil, Wood Flour, etc... Add small amounts at a time and mix it in. It will be the right consistency when it doesn't run off the stirring stick. It will be similar to Vaseline in texture though not quite as thick.

Super Duper Peanut Butter

I think Oops! gets the credit for naming it that.

Same as peanut butter but add milled glass fibers. Oops! may have his own proprietary blend of secret ingredients.

Don't get sloppy with peanut butter. You do not want to have to sand any off.

Filler / Fairing Compound

Start by mixing your resin.

Add 3M Glass Bubbles a little at a time and mix it in. The more you add, the easier the cured product will be to sand but it will lose strength. Once you have enough glass bubbles mixed in, then add small amounts of Cabosil until the consistency is where you want it.

Bonus tip...

Before the resin completely cures, you can shave off excess peanut butter with a "surform" tool.

Re: peanut butter

I am more familiar with the term "peanut butter" used as a consistency description.
The West system of epoxy that I have often used refers to this often in their guide books.
There are several different additives that they spec for different purposes.
After mixing the resin, you add the appropriate compound....fairing compound (easily sandable) or micro balloons ( a b**** to sand) etc. until you get the peanut butter consistancy....hence the name.
They also describe ketchup or mayonnaise and a few others.

Re: peanut butter

there are lots of different answers, depends on what's around. depends on the job too.

a resin, a catalyst, and a thickener. mix the first 2 according to directions or what you're doing and add the thickener to whatever consistency you need.

Re: peanut butter

Anyone have a definitive answer on whether the the standard epoxy "thickeners" are compatible with polyester resins?
I've heard several different "opinions", but never been sure which was correct.

Re: peanut butter

The place I buy my materials from only mentions Phenolic Microballoons for use with epoxy only. I've never used the stuff.
