looking to mount an anchor pulpit on my boat. plan to overdrill the holes then fill with PB (or something else?) then re-drill the right size. what should i use? I only have a few small holes so hope to not have to spend too much for it. i have some gel coat paste from spectrum. or do i need something with more structure?

Why not drill the right sized holes and use 3M 4200 UV stabile to seal the fasteners

I use MarineTex for smaller holes like transducer screws, cable clamps, etc.

Best thing since sliced bread when it comes to repairing stripped deck screws.

Sealers can and do fail with bad installation practices and time.

Sealer are also good at hiding /masking under lying problems when things do go wrong.

I much prefer to seal the substructure to prevent any possible damage from intrusion then use a sealer as the first line of defense.

One would think the 2 oz. jar would be big enough for a hole work

Anytime you drill holes for mounting hardware you need to ensure the holes and screws are sealed appropriately. For this application, I'd drill normal size holes and then use epoxy to coat the holes and the screws. I use toothpics to get the epoxy into the holes and then get epoxy on the screw threads. Never had any issues with this technique.;)

this might be a dumb question, but would epoxy from like Advanced Auto, that comes in those two little tubes do that job?

I use 5 minute epoxy in the little tubes. Always does a good job for me for filling screw holes and coating the screws. Cheap too!!!

Epoxy is a generic name for the cured end products of epoxy resin with widely varying mechanical properties. I use 3 different formulations when building a fishing rod for a customer.

Some are waterproof. Some are UV resistant. Some are colored (Marinetex) and some stay flexible while others turns to concrete.

To fill transducer hole, I first counter sink the hole so that a flat hear screw seats 1/16" or so below the surface. Fill hole and coat screw with Marinetex before installing screw. Once screw is in place, fill hole countersink with MarineTex and sand when dry.

well here are pics of my pulpit install. i started by drilling the 4 holes. wood was light colored and dry so i guess that was good but i had no reason to believe it wouldn't be...lol so i drilled the holes then liberally coated them with a 2 part epoxy. then i drilled the same 4 holes in a piece of 3/8" aluminum plate and used 1/2" x 3" stainless bolts with stainless nylocks and 3M 4000 UV. thats all i had here so used it.

had to use a steel bar for weight to hold it down while i marked and drilled...lol

and here it is today, finally in

Gotta say loving the new pulpit. Anchored up yesterday for the first time since installing the pulpit and adding the 10' of chain. Caught first time. We were hitting about 50/50 as far as the anchor setting. Maybe we just got lucky or maybe the chain really helped. Just a guess but I'd say we were in about 20-25' of water and I probably put out about 60-70' of line so roughly 3:1 scope. I'm going to mark my line so I can have a better idea of how much I have out. Pulling the line was much easier too. I used to have to stand on the bow to get the anchor over the front without scraping it on the boat but now I can just pop up through the bow hatch and pull it in. No standing on the deck.So far so good.
