PCI ethernet card driver for WIN 2K

I reached into my ditty bag for a PCI Ethernet card for my Daddy's computer so that I can get a lot of the updates done before I have to take it back to his dial-up connection.

Win 2k wants a driver for the card and I do not know how to get it. I do not know what the brand is and it is a pain to take his cover back off to try and find one.

Where do I look for a driver? I'm sure it must be kind of generic but apparently Win 2K is too dumb to have it embedded.

Spoilsport! Ok, I'll rip the box apart again. You have to pop off the faceplate to get to the single screw that holds the side panel on. Go figure. What was the guy thinkin who designed this one.:|

Good luck finding the drivers if windows didn't find it. ...try getting your hands on an old 3com card or scm, they have always come right up for me...

option 2..... downlad SP4 from MS directly... but you still have to be connected to the net to get IE6 and all the flash plugins updated.

Yeah ndemge, a real catch 22. I just pulled the card and am looking for any names. So far don't see anything like 3com, just a bunch of number which I will punch into google and see what comes up.

The card should have some kind of identification printed on the circuit board. If not, it's probably some no name cheapy. In that case, find the biggest chip on the card, get the numbers off that and start googling.

Feel free to post those numbers here too if you want.

Hokay! The card may have been made by Kalik in AU. It has an intel chip #s82557. I have made google inquiries (intel chip #) and have come up with many references but no driver downloads. One exception was a site that wanted to charge me.

This card was recently operational in my own Win2K machine but I had to pull it to make room for something else and went to a usb dongle for my ethernet connection. I don't know if the driver for it is still there as I have it disconnected to run my Dad's machine. Even if it was there I would not know how to find it and extract it to load onto my Dad's machine.

I believe that's the Intel Pro/100B chipset...

Try these drivers here

I386, would it be commonplace for a ethernet driver to be that big? It will not fit on a 305 floppy.

Sorry, I'm not running Windows at the moment so I can't verify this, but iirc those old intel driver files would "make" a driver disk set when you run the file you downloaded. So double-click that file and see what it does.

there should also be a FCC ID number on it, you can go to the FCC web site and look it up. They often have links to support and drivers, at least they have when I used there site, who knows things change, just a thought,,,,,yes it hurt,,,,

Indeed rwise. The FCC site did verify, via the FCC ID#, that my PCI Ethernet card was made by intel. I've always wondered why bigger name manufacturers never put more MFG and model info on their products.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a multi floppy driver off intels site and get it over to my dad's computer. When i try to download the driver posted above it just tell me that the file is bigger than my floppy disc. I do not get an option to insert additional discs.

I'm kinda stumped at the moment. I find it hard to believe that the the driver that must have come with this card was that big.

After you do the download fro i386, run the setup program, go to C:\Intel11.1\PRO100 and copy the Win32 folder to a floppy. Put the floppy in your dads comupter. Go to device manager and remove the network card. Click the Scan for new hardware icon, when it finds the network card, follow the screen unti it wants to search for the driver. Choose specific location (or have disk) and point to the floppy drive and install the driver.

^^^ Even easier than that... The file you downloaded... Double click that and step through copying it to C:\Intel11.1\PRO100\blah\blah like it says. Then a menu will pop up. Click the button that says make driver disks. Run through that and it'll make the driver disks that you can take over to the other puter. :)

Re: PCI ethernet card driver for WIN 2K

I seem to be missing something here. I have this file downloaded on my harddrive (pro2kxp.exe) If I double click on it it asks where I want to put it. I do not see any options for making diskettes. If I tell it to send it to a floppy it once again tells me I do not have enough space.

It's a huge file. It tells me I need 11.? megabites.

Just let it go to wherever it wants (necessary evil), then AFTER it copies files to your computer the menu pops up. Just roll with it, you'll see.
