Dear all, I bought an end of 70's/early 80's 4.5 2-stroke.
Running smoothly.
After having taken the rope starter construction apart and checking and cleaning all the parts I assembled it again.
I needly put it back together.
Now the pawls (teeth that come out when pulling the rope, grabbing the flying wheel) are vibrating/trembling when the motor is running. (Pawl: Mercury Quicksilver 30596 - Pawl, Nla @ MarineEngine.com)

What can I do to fix this?
Should I screw on the top nut harder?

:welcome: Hemmingcircle, great to have you aboard...

After looking at the breakdown for your engine, it looks like maybe you need to tighten up the center section and see if that solves the rattling noise. Could be a little grease will help some as well and make sure the wave washer is centered and not off to a side holding it from tightening. JMHO

Those can be a pain to work on and get working correctly. I'd suggest getting a manual. I have a Seloc manual (1404) and it covers all the starters used on 2 cyl Mercs from 65 to 89. It did help me on a rope starter for a '76 7.5 hp. You can also look on ebay for starter assys.

The wave washers for the pawls may be weak and/or the main wave washer for the sheave the nut attaches to. Kind of a can of worms, that's why a manual is good rather than just messages.
