Problem Solved Finaly!........ I purchased a kit that already had the shoes, springs, and cylinder already mounted on a backing plate. I took off the old one and replaced with the new brake kit and then bled the line and walla. The hub doesn't get hot any more

It was probably easier than you thought. I learned those lessons a couple years ago. It really annoyed me when I thought back on how much I paid to have a shop service my wheel bearings.

Sometimes you need to learn hard lessons to learn.

I think in your case as well as others the hardest lesson is simply having the confidence in your own skills, what you may be surprised to learn is that most great gear heads had to learn the hard way just like you.

So, what is your next issue your going to tackle?

Trying to learn from the great info on this forum, I lifted each side and spun my wheels. Pass side dragged for sure. This is the side that slung bearing grease all over and literally boiled out when I stopped at my final destination. I'm guessing my passenger side brake is dragging and needs adjustment. Drivers side is a different story. It doesn't "spin" freely but it spins more than the passenger side.

I pulled the tire off of the Pass side and it looks like I've got drum brakes. I plan to adjust the brake first to tight, then back it off the 8-10 clicks to "loosen" it up a bit. I'm a little wary of pulling the bearing out and repacking, but also curious.

I've got my fingers crossed for a simple adjustment because Sunday is looking like a lake day to me.

Well, first things first. There's no reason to be wary of pulling and repacking the bearings. There's really nothing to it. Or, are you saying you're afraid of what you might find? If so, all the more reason to take a peek, especially if you haven't done so since the boiling grease incident. I assume we're talking about a 2002 model trailer. If so, you'll probably at least need wheel cylinders. We'll be glad to help you dig into it if you want, but your best bet would be to start a new thread and tell us exactly what happened and what you've done since. It's up to you, but based on the little you've said I'm guessing you're a candidate for a road side emergency right now. How do I know? Well, let's not get into that.........:facepalm:

Incoop, thank you. I'll start a new thread and give my best description of what I've done but based on what I've done tonite and my history of the service on this trailer I think my surge brake is not disengaging fully.

They're definitely not returning (disengaging). The question is why. My money's on the wheel cylinders.

Thanks incoop. A set for $40 may be a good bet with little to loose, but why would these go bad only after 2 years?

it may be the wheel cylinder or the return spring. Probably best to replace the lot of hardware
