I picked up a couple of 18 and 20 hp 60s and 70s outboards as part of a deal, and ended up parting them out on ebay with some success - to pay for a boat rebuild project. I have been offered a non-running 60s Evrinrude 33hp motor, which I will either get running again, and if I cannot, would part out. I have been told that the 33hp motors are not in much demand.

Do you have any advice on what motors generally sell well when parted out, and which take a long time to sell?

Re: Parting Out Outboards

Sounds like you might be trying this as a side business?

If so, probably stay away from the older motors. The cost to tear them down, clean them, package and ship gets too high. Collectors/restorers can get the parts free or near that at our AOMCI swap meets. I see these items on ebay for ridiculous prices. I often wonder if they actually sell or not.

I am a bit of a purist, so hate parting out motors unless absolutely necessary, but that is just me. I probably spend much more than they are worth to get them going again, but that is my hobby and what the AOMCI is all about, preserve and protect so to speak.

So bottom line, if you are going to try to move parts quick, and make a profit at the same time, parts from motors 1980 or so and up is where I would generally want to deal with.
