Re: Part # for prop seal and driveshaft seal tool?

Sutor,
I resealed my lower unit without pulling the bearing carrier. I was able to pull the prop shaft seals by following a seal pulling method I found on YouTube. The screw into-the-seal method worked for me. My seals popped right out, and I was able to seat the new ones with a piece of 1" thick-walled PVC.

Personally, I don't go against ANYTHING the moderators (like Boobie) say. These guys are real pros and really know what they are doing. However, I tried the Rube-Goldberg method and it worked for me....luckily. I tried pulling my bearing carrier, but mine was stuck from all the years of neglect from the previous owner.

Thanks for all the input guys. I had to pull the carrier but it came right out. The oring on the back on the carrier was leaking badly.

But I need some advice at this point. The metal tab that my screwdriver is in is part if the old seals right? If so I'm going to prop them out from the back. Got all the rubber out already

So from the photo y'all can tell that I got the top seal out, is that piece under the old seal I pulled out another seal? It looks like aluminum casting and I'm afraid to try and pull it.

As long as you got two seals out from both the prop shaft and the drive shaft you should be okay. Go to shop.evinrude.com, look up your motor and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks bob, I ended up getting them all out. Took some time though. If I unscrew the shift shaft to change the seal will I be able to line it back up with the shift yoke without the special tool? If not I'm just going to skip it. I have the factory manual but it doesn't really talking about the seals. Also do you know the part number of the evinrude oil seal compound off the top of your head. Thanks for this it's my first gearcase. I can see why they are so pricey to have service on. Ill take a fuel system overhaul over a gearcase seal anyday!

The shift rod o-ring is often overlooked , I do not know why that is.----It is easy to change that o-ring.

Ha-Ha Sutor you're learning, aren't you?? I've always used OMC gasket sealing compound on the outside of the seals. You can unscrew the shift rod and it will go back in okay. But if you go any further and take the G/C apart, you'll need the special tool to get the shift yoke back in. When you get all done with it you may want to take it to a DLR and have it pressure and vacuum checked

Thanks fellas, as always!! And yes Bob I have learned more about these Evinrudes from you than anyone else. I should send you a check for all the money that you have saved me this past year. My 75horse is running beautifully still. She's a gem.

Anyways, I do have the gearcase broken down pretty far. Bearing carrier, propshaft, forward gear, driveshaft and pinion are all out. I wasn't planning on unscrewing the shift yoke screw down at the bottom outside of the gearcase. If I leave that screw in along with the gear and bearing at the back of the gearcase, and unscrew the shift rod, how do I go about getting to that o-ring down there? Maybe I should re-assemble the propshaft before I unscrew the shift shaft? Also I am wondering how I am going to get those two tiny detent balls and spring back in safely!! Manual says just to grease em so they stay in place.

If you turn the gearcase upside down the yoke fall into place all by itself.----Done this many, many times.
