Hey guys working on a '77 15hp 'Rude for a friend of mine. Just want to be sure I set the prop and driveshaft seals properly. Any ideas on the part numbers for the tools? I could use a socket but just want to be sure I set them at the proper height. Thanks!

Measure where they are now and use a socket to install them to that dimension.

think this is consistent with above, but seals always bottom out in a housing, right? so might check to see what the original one looks like (which side up, depth, or whatever else), then use the appropriate socket to reseat the new seal up to the should in the housing. Caveat in looking at existing seal to get correct depth is that the existing seal may have come loose in the housing and may have ridden up a little. I just had a driveshaft seal like that (Chrysler) -- concern was that the thing was spinning with the shaft rather than trying to determine whether it was deep enough. Instructions were to set the seal down to the shoulder in the housing.

don't need no stinkin' tool.

If you really want the tools, check with a BRP dealer as he should have a tool catalog. But the price may blow your shorts off. The tools are really great but for a maybe a one shot deal, they may not be worth it. I also used a lot of sockets.

Well Bob if you were comfortable using a socket then I will be also. Do you think I should pull the bearing carrier or try and do the seals first and if I can't get them out then pull the carrier?

What sealant if any should I use around the seals?

Permatex aviation is what can be used.----Factory tools are shop time savers / money makers.-----On your motor there is a special tool to install the shift fork/ yoke.----I do not have the tool.-What I do is I turn the unit upside down and the shift fork / yoke falls into place every time.

I'd rather use the evinrude gasket sealer if that is what the dealer uses. Permatex makes some good alternatives though.

I guess the doubting just never stops ---------The Permatex container and the Evinrude container are one and the same !!!

Re: Part # for prop seal and driveshaft seal tool?

I guess to clarify my question, I was really asking what Evinrude compound to use to seal the oil seals, and if there was any necessary. And sorry man, I'm not being ugly, but I don't always immediately jump at advice from people with 500 posts that have only been on the forum for one month.

But, that being said, I do appreciate your input.

Pull the bearing carrier because it's easier to work on the seals with the prop shaft out of the way.

Sorry man , I have only repaired fine machinery for about 45 years.-----Only 500 posts but that is no indication of what I know about these motors.

Geez Racerone, I've got you by one year in the marine industry with 46 years plus. Six years in automotive before that.

Hmmm. I guess I won't even try to answer this one because I only have 430 posts since 1999.

500 posts is a ton of posts for only being on here for a month or two. What I was saying was a lot of guys get in here and try and rack up their post count. I wasn't accusing you of doing it, just saying that before I knew your story I was just being cautious. Just got slightly offended by your comment about my uncertainty. Either way it's no big deal. If you say permetex works then I believe you.

Man that's one thing I hate about the Internet. So easy for things to be taken out of context. Again I do appreciate your input. This is my favorite section of the forum so I don't want to have any issues :)

Hey Bob does the shift shaft just unscrew out like it does in the bigger motors?
