Read this as a guide and also browsed forums for more info:
http://www.simplicityboats.com/latexcarnel.html

So here's what I'm using to paint everything (bottom and topside):

  • Olympic 100% Exterior Latex Paint
  • Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer

Procedure:
  1. Fill holes and gouges with marine epoxy
  2. Wet sand surface with 60 grit paper (may use black and decker sander)
  3. Clean and let dry
  4. Apply primer and let dry
  5. Sand with fine sandpaper and wash/dry
  6. Apply 1st coat of paint
  7. Sand with fine sandpaper and wash/dry
  8. Apply 2nd coat of paint
  9. Let dry for a week

Has anyone have any experience using these products? I'm planning to try the tip and roll method to apply paint. Any other input?

------------UPDATE-------------------

Thanks so some input from the community I'm now leaning towards the following procedure for painting the HULL:

  1. Sand and clean surface
  2. Use 3M marine filler to repair old screw holes and surface imperfections (sand smooth)
  3. Use Interlux No Sand Primer on the hull
  4. Sand smooth, wash and let dry
  5. Apply first coat of Rustoleum marine topside paint (Does this work on the hull though?)
  6. Sand smooth, wash and let dry
  7. Apply 2nd coat
  8. Let dry

Am I missing anything?

What kind of boat? IMHO it really doesn't matter cuz, I would never, never, ever paint any kind of boat with that paint and primer. Read the last link in my signature below.

It's a fiberglass boat. Why won't 100% acrylic latex paint won't work? I've looked up some articles online and they states that it actually holds up pretty well for 3-5 years.

I saw in another post that you also recommend rust-oleum. Can you point me to the right product on Lowes.com? I can't seem to find it.

Yep, I recommend Rustoleum Professional Oil Based, with Valspar Hardener. My recipe is 1 qt Paint, 1 1/4 cup Acetone, 2oz of Hardener. HINT: Using the Gloss white as a Base you can use Artist Acrylic Oil Paint to Tint the paint to ANY color you want. Thin it with the Acetone and then mix it with the white to get the tint you want. I use a Harbor Freight HVLP Spray Gun with a 1.8mm tip to spray the Paint but you can use the Roll n' Roll method to apply it too!

Many thanks for your input!

Re: Painting the boat and need people to guide me

I also heard of Interlux 2000E and that it's supposed to be really good but I'm not sure what stage of painting it is or if I even need..

My situation is that there is old faded paint that looks bad. I want to sand (or skip if possible) and repaint.

Could I use Interlux No Sand Primer (to skip massive sanding):
http://www.iboats.com/Interlux-Fibe...81313907--session_id.217272902--view_id.48414

3M Marine Filler to repair any gouges/holes:
http://www.iboats.com/Premium-Fille...81313907--session_id.217272902--view_id.68602

But I'm still confused to what to use for actual paint.... I would like to use Rustoleum as I have a gift card from Lowes that I can use... but I don't mind going for something else.

Thanks!

Then use the rustoleum marine topside paint. It is like $15 a quart and available at all the big hardware stores.

Sanding's not all that bad. Pick up a relatively inexpensive random orbital, get some 80 grit pads and fire away. I know you don't want to do it, but you'll be much happier in the long run if you do. Not only are you removing the old paint, but you're leveling a lot of imperfections that way. Plus, by sanding, you don't have as big a worry over differing paint interactions.

Okay... I'll drop by Harbor Freight to pick up an orbital sander. :p

Did you not read this... You can substitute Rustoleum Products. Some of the Advanced Auto Stores carry Acrylic Enamel Paint Hardener.
"Paint Your Boat for Under $100 Bucks"

No I did read your write up and it was very informative and I really do appreciate it (I'm sure the whole community does too!)... it's just that I have a gift card to lowes that I really want to use. And if the Rustoleum topside paint can work for the hull I could use the gift card towards that and save some cash.

Many thanks for all your input... I would have painted it with vinyl paint (an probably learned the hard way) if you didn't chime in.

Re: Painting the boat and need people to guide me

"Topside" is anything that's NOT "Bottom Paint" or anti-fouling. Bottom paint is usually applied to boats that spend a lot of time in salt water and is essential if you plan to leave your boat in the water. Most trailered boats, however, normally don't use anti-fouling paint as the boat can be easily washed while not in use.

Like I said you can use the Rustoleum Professional Oil Based Paint sold @ Lowes and get the same exact results.

you can use most topsides paint on the hull and bottom, if it's a trailered boat that does not stay in the water for more than 4-5 days at a time

Re: Painting the boat and need people to guide me

Hey guys I'm nearly done with painting the boat and am wondering if I need to add a polish or something after the final coat or is it safe as is? Thanks! Will post pictures soon!

What paint did you end up using, and what technique did you use? That will tell us a lot. You prolly do NOT need any polish and you will probably need to wait a least a month before you do anything to the paint to make sure it comes to a Full cure.

Re: Painting the boat and need people to guide me

I use Rustoleum Professional Oil Based Paint for the whole boat using the roll and roll method. It looks tons better so far! So does that mean I should wait a month before taking the boat out?

Re: Painting the boat and need people to guide me

Did you use the hardener or just straight Rustoleum paint? If no hardener then, I'd recommend at least two weeks before launching and like I said prefferably 4 weeks to get a good cure. Did you thin with acetone at all? If you did add the hardener you could launch after two weeks.

Re: Painting the boat and need people to guide me

I did straight Rustoleum... I am not in a rush as there is tons of other small stuff I need to work on in the meantime. 4 weeks it is! Thanks!
