I have a 1990 Volvo Duoprop for 3 years. I boat in Lake Erie, Ohio. I have had to paint my outdrive every year. I pressure wash at the end of the season. In the spring, I wet sand with detergent water, rinse,Zinc chromate prime (1 can), and finish coat (1 can)with Tempo products from West Marine. Shouldn't a paint job last for more than one season? The directions on the spray can say nothing about drying time. how long should I wait between primer and finish coat? How long should I wait between multiple finish coats? How long should it dry before lanuching the boat? When I pulled the boat last fall, the primer was intact, but most of the finish coat was warn away, not flaked or peeling, just worn off. How many finish coats?
I have searched the forums and follow the general guideline given. Any suggestions to imnprove paint life. I am tired of pulling the outdrive and all the prep work.
Thanks
Mwzoro@aol.com

Re: Painting outdrive

Are you properly etching the outdrive? Aluminum oxidizes immediately and the primer wont adhere well to that. A 50/50 solution of water and vinegar works well. Get all the loose paint/primer off and spray it with the solution, let dry and wipe with acetone if needed. Maybe Paul Moir will see this thread....he is a good source for painting info.
