Can I use rustoleum on my transom assembly after I sand/prep/ prime it? Or will it fail fairly quickly? There is no corrosion on it, just the paint is wearing through due to age.

I used rustoleum engine enamel gloss black on mine... Still holding up very well but I trailer my boat and only use it in fresh water... your mileage may vary.

The major point I'd make though is that if you sand anywhere through the paint and primer and there is exposed aluminum, you MUST prime it with zinc chromate primer... I think Napa sells it in a rattle can

Topcoat paint must be oil based, or it will fail. Zinc Chromate primer for aluminum is the best. There are marine enamels and 1 part polyurethane paints for just a bit more than Rustolium. They are likely better.
