painting my bass boat

so heres the deal i want to paint my 1951 astroglass bass boat. right now its got a metalflake on it but i want to get rid of that. my question is do i have to use a special kind of paint or can i do something like bulldog then primer then base and then clear or do i have to use some kind of special boat paint any help would be greatly appreciated want to start this weekend cause im starting fishing in spring. also one more thing i want to get rid of the fiberglass doors on the storage compartments, would it be okay to go with aluminum or would it add to much weight???? and does anyone know where i could get the doors made at....
