I have done some research and I am thinking about painting the inside of my boat decks and floors with Zolatone. Does anyone here have any useful info or experiences with this product. Most of the information I have found shows people using it on aluminum boats. Anyone have any pictures of boats with this on the deck?
My boat is a skiff. Where is the best place to buy Zolatone? Trying to budget somewhat.. Any ideas suggestions... are appreciated thanks

Here is a picture of my boat.

Yes the decks have been recently redone before I bought it.. There might be some light coat of some primer on it currently but not much, nothing that cant be sanded in a timely fashion. I want to give it some color with that splatter type zolatone.. the basic blue .... and also use it as non skid

Zolatone is a HIGH Quality product and because of that, YOU PAY for it!!!!! IF you want to take the time and effort you can SIMULATE the Zolatone effect pretty easily and make your deck look very nice. Take a look at what one of our iBoat members did do his boat using his simulated method.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=355668&page=4&highlight=andgott

I used his method on my boat and to get a non skid effect I did this. I Used HVLP spray gun to spray Rustoleum Professional Oilbase High Gloss paint on my deck. While it was still wet I sprinkle Coarse sand all over the deck. I let it dry for two days and then swept all the loose sand off the deck. I then Sprayed another coat of paint over the sand to "Soften" the effect of the sand, and let that dry for several days. I then applied his zolatone process using a dark blue and Baby Blue to match my boat color. I do Not have pics, and my boat hull is currently flipped awaiting paint but it turned out GREAT. Total cost for my 15 foot boat... $35.00 bucks.. Something to think about.

All Lowe's and Home Depot's carry it. It is EXTREMELY durable paint. Many iBoaters paint their Boat Hulls with it and also Trailers. You can even add a hardener if you like. Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener. I can recommend it without any reservations. Do a search here on the forum for Rustoleum paint and you will find multiple threads about this paints use.

I did some more research..
You said you used a HVLP spray gun. Is there a special type or size of the tip?
I noticed there is not a big range of colors.. Is this paint mixable?
I want a dark blue color. theme.
As far as the deck, I am thinking a off white color, then splatter 2 blues.
Can this stuff also be used on the console?
I guess you did not use a primer. Just sand and paint.
In my research I saw there is a high gloss like you said and there also is a marine grade?
Which is better?

Here is a example of the theme I wanted to go off of.

You said you used a HVLP spray gun. Is there a special type or size of the tip? Tip needs to be 1.8 or 2.0 mm.

I noticed there is not a big range of colors.. Is this paint mixable? Yes and No. At the store...NO! Can you mix and tint...Yes. It is Acrylic Enamel Oil Based Paint. I went to an Art Store and Got Acrylic Oil Based Paint in tubes. I mixed my own and it worked GREAT. I thinned it with Acetone and poured it in and stirred it up and Voila' I had the color I wanted "BABY BLUE" . should not be a problem to come up with two shades of a lighter blue and an off white using the gloss white as your base. I'm pretty sure they make a Gloss Blue that you could tint to your shade using the same method

Can this stuff also be used on the console? Sure especially using the hardener.

I guess you did not use a primer. Just sand and paint. For the deck, No I did not, but I did sand and wipe down with Acetone first. I would Prime the console however.

In my research I saw there is a high gloss like you said and there also is a marine grade?
Which is better? Basically NO Difference. I'd use the Industrial Enamel with the Valspar Hardener

Here is a example of the theme I wanted to go off of.

I think I may have it down. I either have to buy or rent a sprayer at this point.
How much gloss you think I need 1gal?
Would adding a coat of hardner on the deck after the zolatone affect make things even better?
You mentioned you used sand for non slip, is that buyable?

Buy HVLP spray gun from Ebay - $30. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1-7-...Z310320959130QQptZMotorsQ5fAutomotiveQ5fTools
1 Gallon of White for the Deck. You add the 2oz of Hardener per quart of Paint and Mix it all together before you spray it or Splatter it. Couple of Quarts for the Zolatone splatter.
For the sand. You apply the first coat of Paint to the deck and while its still wet you take regular sand like they use to mix concrete and sprinkle it over the wet paint and let it dry. Then spray on the final coat of paint OVER the sand. Then do the Zolatone Splatter last. You can add hardener to the splatter paint if you want, I did not.

I recommend the Harbor Freight Chicago Electric Power Tools 44677 HVLP Turbine system. Its on sale right now for $74.95. I have two and a Fuji Pro S2 gun and turbine ($800.00) and I enjoy the simplicity and paint quality of the HF unit. Also, it comes with 3 different needle and tip sets. I paint oil on chairs for a factory in my spare time and I really appreciate the HF guns. These are all my units so I am recommended based on the positives of the HF over the high $ Fuji.
