I am planning to build my first homemade boat this summer and am starting to think this little project out. I'll be building a 14' epoxy over plywood 14' flat bottomed boat (the Garvey 14 from Bateau) that will be used mainly for river fishing, maybe some hunting down the road. It will be stored in a boat house when its not being used, with the exception of staying in the water over a weekend when we're at the cottage. My question is: can I use a topside paint to paint both the exterior of the hull and the interior? I'm thinking of Interlux Brightside Polyurethane, the BoatUS catalog says it can be used on "properly prepared epoxy". Do I have to first prime the boat, or can I just roll and tip right over the epoxy? Also, one more question: As far as epoxy goes, I've heard good things about West System on here, but I was wondering what advantages that brand has over other brands, i.e. durability, ease of application, etc. Is it worth an extra 100 bucks or so to go with West System over another brand? Thanks for all your expertise!

Re: Painting Epoxy Over Plywood

"properly prepared" means must be COMPLETELY sanded/no shine left.. an then washed down with 50/50 ammonia & water..

brite side paints are great an available thru interlux, petit, an ephannes .. all are good paints .. make sure you consider the later..but all,, can't take more than a few soild days in water..

no primer is nesssary or needed or wanted..ROLL, brush & tip is the bestway..do a 'red' search on this page on painting...

west systems is good but there's a whole lot better an cheaper out there..
i use west systems when i have to .. most boat centers carry it.. plus it kinda got the 'name'coined,, like 'romex' is for house wire.. but it doesn't make it better.. i like an use 'clarkcraft.com' product.. it's a 1 to 1 mix.. an a 1 to 1 is better than a higher ratio,, anyday..
some like 'US composites.com ' also .. check/read/an learn all you can now while you have time..

the web is a great tool...

Re: Painting Epoxy Over Plywood

Well after wasting hours searching the internet for different types of marine resin applications for my boat I got the best info. by following the links and info. posted on iboats. I just ordered the Clark Craft Epoxy system - among many, I had tried a similar 1:1 type system by Glaze Coat with the best results and this stuff seems to be exactly what I'm looking for and the price is right too. Plus their site gives lots of useful info. on how to use and apply their product. I'll try and post some pics and give a status next time, but thanks everyone...
