..Im refinshing a merc outdrive heres a question....I used a stripper on it and it took the paint off only on certain parts of the drive..It has been repainted or a new lower half was put on..what ever. So do i shoot a zinc on the whole drive..Thats a zinc coating on top of the factory finish or should i tape off the factory finish ...and apply the zinc to only bare part of the drive

Gunner,

It won't hurt to go ahead and use the ZC primer on the whole drive. This will give you a more consistant finsh as well in the end.

Just make Sure that all of the stripper is removed with water, Water will neutralize the stripper & if your doin it with spray paint use a good engine enamal:D

Re: painting a outdrive

Hi Guys:
Having repainted three outdrives and having done all the research both here and online this is how I did it:
(i) Sand existing finish and reduce corrosion to bare metal.
(ii) Wash with degreaser
(iii) Wash with dish soap and warm water
(iv) Wash with 50% water and white vinegar to prepare the raw aluminum
(v) Blow dry. I don't have a compressor so I use a leaf blower!
(vi) Shoot the entire outdrive with a thin coat of ZC within an hour of applying the vinegar solution and drying
(vii) Gently fine sand and touch up any raw metal areas with ZC
(viii) 2 coats of Rustoleum, sand between coats if you like.

I'm no expert but it seems to hold up very well and is cheap and cheerful!

Hello TG..

Our top outdrive Tech here says he only uses merc primers and topcoats.

He only spot primes then preps and topcoat.

BTW he is the best Merc tech Ive ever known..and used to teach for Merc for certifications..

I have no idea what the oem paint is..

He just primes, preps, paint and clear all with merc rattle cans.
