I have a small 14 ft aluminum that I am going to have media blasted. The guy at the media blasting says that since the boat will freshly blasted a etching primer will not be necessary cause the paint will stick good to blasted surface. Is he wrong ? do I still need to etch prime then prime before topcoat ?

Thank you in advance.

Always!!! You should also do a thorough mild acid wash of the surface too prior to the SE primer. Only need a light coat of the SE. Then scuff with a scotch brite pad. then prime with the recommended primer for the final color coat paint.

Zinc chromate acid wash primer. Just like woodon said. Depending on the paint you may only need that and not another promer for the paint.

I decided to use paint remover and stripped half of the boat today. It really looks good in the bare aluminum too would it be ok to leave it bare ? any pros's or Con's ?

No problem with leaving it in the "raw". It may oxidize a bit over time, but that's ok and you can always buff it out to a mirror shine, if you have the time, patience and elbow grease to do it, but on one is gonna see what's happening below the waterline any way. Keep her as you like her. Got any pics? What type of paint stripper did you use?

An aluminum boat only needs to be painted if it's going to be used in saltwater to cut down on corrosion.

I prefer an unpainted aluminum boat, no worries about scratching the new paint and easier to take care of.

Re: Painting a freshly media blasted aluminum boat

I have decided to leave the boat bare aluminum it looks good and I don't have to spend the time or money to paint it.
I used a paint stripper called " Dad's ", but It is the same as Aircraft stripper and others that I have used in the past.
3 coats with a plastic scraper seems to do the trick, I also hit it with the DA sander and finish it off by hand with burgundy Scotch Bright.
Took me about 2 1/2 hours to get to this point. Hopefully I will be done tomorrow.

Nice boat, looks pretty neat stripped back :)

On your last picture what type of portable shelter is it that you've used? It looks pretty awesome. I could have done with one of those from the start of my project!

That is a shelter Logic I put up last fall and it is 12x20 I got it on sale for $279.00 at tractor Supply. I have a 18ft Starcraft project boat with trailer stored in it along with a graden tractor, snow blower and a small trailer. I love that shelter it has a zippered door on each end and the material is nice and thick. Took about a day to set it up. Pics are from last fall just after I set it up.

Re: Painting a freshly media blasted aluminum boat

Finally got the time to finish the stripping it is complete. I have decided to leave everything below the water line bare aluminum and paint the sides from water line up. I am using some left over paint from another job ( 1965 Ford Mustang Wimbeldon White ) for this. I also want to paint the inside with some type of boat floor paint if there is such a thing ? any ideas what I could use ?

I used about a gallon of stripper which included about two coats to remove 90% of the paint and then another thin coat along with a burgundy Scotch bright pad to get the rest of it off. Was not that bad of a job considering the boat had two differant colors of paint on it.
A plastic scraper works great, also don't forget to wear eye protection, plastic gloves, long sleeved The paint remover neutralizes easily with water. ( keep a water hose handy ) It does not hurt the grass, but will burn your skin. If you get it on your skin water will quickly neutralize it.

The Aircraft Stripper made by Rustoleum I got it at Autozone $39.00 a gallon or Dads paint remover was just as good at Meijers here in MI. I tried some cheaper brands and they don't seem to work as well.

Looks good and I like leaving the bottom side bare aluminum with the sides painted, classic look!

You should give the hull a TSP wash down after the stripping is done, TSP will help neutralize stripper left in the cracks and crevices. Mix a cup of TSP in a gallon of hot water and give it a good bath, rinse well afterwards. Then proceed with your acid bath, ZC primer and paint. Get the TSP at you local big box store, HD, Lowes, Menards, etc.
