Can someone tell me the difference between Marine Paint and The paint you buy for cars with the clearcoat.
I was going too buy Auto paint and then some clearcoat from Advance Auto.
but then saw this Marine paint you can buy from Lowes.
Son works at lowes and can get a quart of marine paint for 18 bucks.
Versus a quart of auto paint for 25 bucks at advance auto, then need too buy clearcoat for about the same price.
Price really not issue just want best paint for the job.

The Boat is Fiberglass and also should I have it Primered aswell and if so whats best for it?

Re: Paint

To know the real difference between the two would take some digging and you didn't even give the brand of the Auto paint, so we can't even guess.

I say this because there is a tremendous number of different types of auto paints that use different technologies to make your car look shiny, some aren't much different than what's used in the marine industry. These paints aren't similar to the Lowe's marine paint though.

In general most 2 part paints are better than single part paints, plus most auto paints would look much better than a low cost single part paint from the hardware store.

The look of the finished product will depend a great deal on the amount and quality of prep work you do, so read some of the threads here on painting boats and you'll get a better idea of how you may want to do it.

Re: Paint

Ayuh,... In my experince,... The automotive Basecoat/ Clearcoats Suck for boats....
Actually, I think it Sucks for anything, only because repairs are about Impossible, without reshooting the whole thing...
But,...
I use 2pt. urethane Automotive paints exclusively on the boats I paint....
My local Napa carries the Martin Seymour brand,... Their 2pt. Fleet paints are Great,...Prizim I believe is the name of the line...
It shoots easily,+ Looks absolutely Great when finished...
It also holds up extremely Well,... Both topsides,+ below the waterline...

Re: Paint

I understand thanks.

The type of paint was Duplicolor and Clearcoat was same.
I have a friend that has a garage and a spray gun and he painted his golf cart with it and it came out nicely. So was going too let him paint it for me.
Im doing the sanding and preparing and he is going too do the painting.
I do however understand its hard too answer due too so many products out there, that can be used.

Thanks will research more too try too get more insight on the different paints and products.

Thanks
Wally

Re: Paint

I have been using a Jones-Blair acrilyc urathane paint for my boats. It is hard yet flexable. I think flexability is key when dealing with a fiberglass boat. I can get a gallon with activator and reducer for about $150, which is much cheaper than automotive base coat/clear coat. This is the same paint used by Coca Cola, in the Houston area, for their delivery trucks. A clear coat is not needed, but they offer a self-leveling clear which I use as added protection, and it really makes the paint job 'pop'.

Re: Paint

I can't recommend Easypoxy enough. It goes on with a brush and/or roller, levels outs beautifully and has a terrific gloss. And it's pretty cheap. 1 or 2 quarts would easily do your whole boat.

Re: Paint

Thanks EZ and others.
Im checking out that Easypoxy now, but came across this.

This is something ive found that looks like it should do the trick and no clearcoat or anything will be needed.
I can have a friend spray it for me. Any suggestions on how many layers I should have done or any prep or final tips you have.

Re: Paint

Is the paint for above or below the waterline? below the water the possibility that the paint will absorb water is not good, it will eventually fail and come off. If the boat is a trailer boat, then a good 2part paint should be fine, if its a slip boat, then use a hard bottom coat paint even in fresh water a good bottom paint keeps the scum line from forming.

I had good success with an epoxy primer for the top sides and thinning a good quality interlux for spraying. Stays bright and clean and easy to touchup. Tho not cheap as compared to other brands.

Re: Paint

It says its good above and below the waterline. So your saying it will peel in time?
I will be painting the whole outside of the boat with this, above and below water level.
