Can someone please give me advice on painting my 1986 30 hp Johnson engine? How to clean the engine before paint? Primer? Type of paint to use? How many coats?
Thank you

Any old paint, any old colours, the more lurid the better. It all helps to make it unattractive to thieves.

I believe you will want to use Zinc Chromate as a primer on aluminum before you paint it. Do a Google search and you will get plenty of info. Perhaps someone else will chime in soon on this topic.

Yes to be more serious zinc chromate is the prmer for use on aluminium.

If you really want to make it look attractive then you should be able to get the correct paint to match from your dealer, Even iboats maybe.

Tempo is out of business (about six months ago). Any quality lacquer will do.

Here is a helpful link for advice from the Antique and Classic Outboard Motor Paint & Decals site.

BTW, from the Tempo website: " Tempo Products was a leading marine accessory manufacture that had specialized in the aftermarket fuel category since 1962. All assets from this acquisition will now be located at Moeller?s manufacturing facility in Sparta, TN."
