I recently bought a boat out of state. They charged me for taxes as well as titles and registration. Get back to PA to register it and the dealer says that they never should have charged me for taxes in their state when it it getting registered in PA. Also why would they charge me for title and registration when they didn't register this in their state? Is there something fishy going on? I do not want to have to pay taxes twice... any input appreciated

I am from GA and bought my boat in SC. They charged me for tax/title as well. They then sent me a check for the amount. They did it for accounting purposes, I would call the dealer and see if that is their intent.

Re: PA registration

I bought my boat in Wisconsin. I got there, the owner signed the title to me and I paid him. Got back to PA and took care of the legal stuff here. I paid everything here in PA: sales tax, registration and title. Some states require a title to be signed in front of a notary so in that case you would at least have had to do that there in the origin state. I think the people in the state you bought the boat from thought you were going to keep it registered in that state, therefore did the transaction as if you were a resident. I believe you should be entitled to a refund of taxes, but don't take that for fact. I do know however, that PA will try to collect taxes here when you register it. Maybe proof of taxes paid elsewhere will cover that??? Best bet is to stop by your local boat dealer and ask them.

I don't know if you're anywhere near Harrisburg but the folks at the PA Fish & Boat commision are VERY helpful. If you're not close maybe give them a call.

Re: PA registration

I have done it the other way around. I was always told you pay tax i the state is is registered. I live in PA. I bought a boat in NJ. Took all the Paperwork to MD. registered the boat in MD, paid MD for reg fee, title fee and sales tax. It was on a trailer, so I had to register the trailer in PA. Took the trailer title to PA , guessed at the value of the trailer and paid the sales tax, title and registration.
I am sure you are not supposed to pay sales tax in 2 states. In fact I bought another boat in PA (home state). Got all the paperwork notorized in PA, but only paid for trailer tax and registration. Went to MD, where I boat, and paid the sales tax on the boat. I bought both boats on trailers, so I just tried to be realistic about the share of the total price that I assigned to the boat and the trailer. No one gave me any hassle. Both my boats sit on PA registered trailers and the boats say MD on the side.

Re: PA registration

Go online to the PA Fish and Game. There they have applications for registering a boat. There is a box for PA sales tax exemption code. on the reverse there are code numbers and applicable situations. www.fish.state.pa.us
