Hello Folks,

My dad asked me to post a thread for him..he is enjoying retirement down in the Keys and told me the other day that his 2001 150OX66 is making a crackling sound above 4000 rpms..the engines seems to run fine and does not lose power, but he is concerned over a new noise as we all are unlike our wives who would just turn up the stereo (at least mine does)...I dont know if he has a worn spark plug wire arching on the block....tough for me to tell from 1500 miles away and I dont want to tell him to replace the plugs wires for no reason, but they are original and it is probably time..anyone ever cross this bridge before?

Like you say, pretty tough to diagnose from 1500 miles, but I'd suggest removing the upper cowl and look around in there carefully to try and identify the source of the "popping/crackling" sounds, Before it leaves dad sitting out in the Atlantic Ocean!;)....maybe a loose wire or component?...next step would be to have the motor looked at by a Yamaha Technician. Good Luck!

Oh you guys will get a kick out of this...dad has a few spools of leader material on a bungi cord strung across the after end of the T-top..at high speeds, the wind over the windshield causes one of the spools to wiggle back and forth and it was hitting a rocket launcher/rod holder....he took one of his buddies for a ride this morning to help him check it out.....there was not noise coming from the engine at 30 mph...but there was a clicking sound from up near the T-top.....OH well....at least he is paying attention to noises in the boat.....
