Overheating Problems- '89 Force 15hp

I've got a 1989 15hp Force Outboard. It has been a great motor. Lately it has been (what seems to be) overheating. I'll be driving it down the St. Croix River and it will start nocking, imediately i kill the motor. it starts smoking, and any water i splash on the heads turns to steam. it doesn't seem to be shooting water out the back like i believe it should. I've torn the lower unit apart and looked at the impeller, wich doesn't seem to be damaged, just a little worn on the tips of each flap. i thought it could be plugged so i ripped the engine down and checked each and every water way, nothing. is it most likely the impeller, and where do i get one off the net. i want to be sure it is the right one. Model #152F9A S# 1380

no thermostat. i was wondering how much pressure it takes for the rubber paddles on an impeller to push the water up through the motor? the one i have seems tight when i turn it, but would a new one make that much difference?

not sure, I know that they are tight, the "wings" kind of bend inside the pump housing. when you take it out does it try to straighten out or does it keep the bent shape? It should straighten out.

Best thing to do is to get a new impeller. Also inspect the inside of the water pump to make sure it is not pitted or damaged in any way. When inserting the new impeller you want to turn the drive shaft slowly clockwise while pushing down on the water pump till it is seated. Pretty much any other way to try to install the water pump will be wrong and can deter how much water it will pump. I have see the impellers with the brass insert separate from the rubber so at low rpm the impeller will spin fine but at higher rpm the brass fitting spins and the impeller sits still.
