I have a 85 Force 85hp engine. We just got the boat, sat for about 4 years. Got it runnin and everything, fixed a crack in the lower unit, now it has an overheating problem. The thermostat is fine, and we put a new impeller in, but it still isn't sucking water up into the engine. We are using those ear muff like things for the intakes. We took the lower unit off, and when you spray some water in and spin the pump manually, it does spit some water up. If you spray water directly into the inlet of the thermostat, water comes out of the exhaust by the propeller. Could it be it's simply not getting enough water with the muff's, or there's a partial clog between the intakes and the pump?

Re: Overheating Problem Force 85HP

Welcome to iboats, MM.
It could be a clog. On a 50HP Force, I had fits after installing a new impeller before taking my boat out for the first time after a summer of sitting. It turned-out to be a mud dawber's nest in the foot tube! I ended-up R&Ring the lower unit three times!
So yes, it could be an obstruction (dang bugs!).
Also, the seal on some of those earmuffs is not the best, and again---a problem on the 50HP. Take it to the lake on a slow day, and run it at the ramp. It should start pumping after a minute or so (t-stat must open before it pumps). While it's running at idle, take your hand and touch one clyinder head at a time, avoiding the ignition system (It'll floor ya quick). If you can hold your skin against the head for 3 seconds, it cooling fine.

Thanks, but it turned out to be the muffs. I got some different ones, the round type instead of the rectangle shaped muffs I had, and it worked great. She's ready for the water now..except for the big damn bee's nest in it! lol..i think I can fix that one though
