Overheating Mercury 50hp 2-stroke

I have a 2000 Mercury 50horsepower 2-stroke outboard engine. I have replaced the thermostat and water pump. The engine quickly overheats. Some water does come out the outlet tube, but not as much as used to when it was new. I need to know what else to check to diagnose this problem. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

I would start looking for clogs in the system. Have you flushed it lately? Also you might look into an infistation of some sort. Here in the western states we have a zebra mussle problem. They get into the motor through the water inlet above the torpedo and grow in the lower unit starving the water pumps. The only way to clear them out is dry it then start scraping the inside of the water ways. Good luck.
