We have a 1970 Evinrude 115 model 15083D. My husband
has replaced the water pump and thermostat and the motor still runs hot. What else could he check? There is no water at all coming out of the holes in the back of the lower unit.

Thanks

Some evinrudes don't discharge water at the holes at the top of the driveshaft housing, just below the powerhead. Why do you say it is overheating?
DHP

It was running hot before my husband put a t-stat in. And it is hot to the touch in about a minute after running it.

Any suggestions?

Is or has this engine been run in saltwater?

Temp is hard to judge. You can go to your dealer and see if he'll sell you a 163 degree temp stick.Rub it on the top of the cylinder head, and run the motor. If it melts and turns glossy,it is overheating.
DHP

What DHPMARINE said. If it fails the thermo melt stik test and if you are positive that the waterpump and T/stat are installed properly,I would suspect either the waterpump discharge tube is not sealed off good or the engine blocks water deflectors are problematic causing waterjacket restriction.I believe that's what Rick was alluding to when asking whether the engine had been used in salt water. If not flushed thouroughly after each use ,crud can build up in the water passages and inhibit heat transfer or lead to outright restrictions.
