ok, i had my boat motor running well on some muffs early this season and got to get out today on it. started up good and ran fine untill it got hot and died out. i know it overheated because it was melting wire sheaths. did a little fishing and let it cool down then started it up again (had a little trouble but fired up alright) i would have paddled but i was going up river against the wind no way i would have made it back to dock. drove her about 3/4 the way back and she got hot made some funny noises (not clanking or knocking but more of a humming noise) and shut off. we paddled the rest of way got a little wet and got her back home, put the muffs on and now i cant get it to fire up.
here are my questions and what i have done. (keep in mind this is my first outboard so fairly new to them)
the motor is a 15hp evinrude 1991
E15EIA
i pulled thermo and it was bone dry, put the water hose to it and got water out of my intake and discharge holes.
checked the plugs they dont look too burnt and did a simple spark test and i do have spark.
i dont know how to check the fuel but i pulled off the connection from tank line to motor and had pressure there and fuel coming out. also while i was trying to pull start it it made a backfire type sound so something is firing. at first i thought flooded but let it sit and didnt prime and still nothing, primed 1 or 2 pumps and tried and still nothing.
the adjustment screw for the carb (rich to lean) i turned all the way to right and gave it about 1/4 turn to a time and tried untill it was open completly...still nothing.
i read in another thread about compresison test but i dont have the tool and at the moment i dont have the money to go buy one. is there any way i can get a general idea if compression is ok just by sound. and can you use any sort of ether in the carb to help get to turn over?
i also read in another thread about overheating can fry a component of the exaust system causing the motor to not start because the exaust cannot escape properly.
ok thats what i got, any help would be greatly appreciated
