I'm working on a 1996 maxum 3.0 alpha one gen 2 I overheated the boat this weekend bad enough to melt the exhaust bellow is there any disadvantage to running an exhaust tube instead of a bellow and what other problems should I look for thanks for your help in advance

I think the bigger question is what else was ruined... If you melted your exhaust bellows, I would also assume you no longer have your exhaust shutters.

I just split the drive and found half the metal plate and the melted shudder material. The impeller is all there but the rubber stays curved when I pull it from the housing but it is still snug

When was your impellar changed last? Should be done every few years. Any idea what caused the overheat?? did you run through a sandbar or any shallow water? If the leg picked up sand or debris, you definitely want to change your impellar and flush the cooling system. If not, pull your thermostat and verify it works properly by putting it in hot water.

Haven't used one before, but I am currently restoring a boat, and plan to use the tube. Read nothing but good things unless you mind possibly being a little louder on plane.

you also burned the rubber exhaust hoses inside the bilge.

so how hot did you get the motor? you may want to do a compression test as well.

You may also want to check for water in the cyls when you do the comp test. Look for actual water being pushed out and rust on the spark plug electrodes. This points to a blown head gasket. Sometimes the comp test will be close to normal but the gasket is starting to leak small amounts of water especially when the engine is shut down for a while. Blown HGs, warped heads and cracked heads are common after a bad overheat.
