Hi All, I'm new to the forum. I'm sure this topic has been covered many times, but I'm totally stumped by my problem. I have a 1989 Johnson 60hp J60tlcea VRO outboard. It has been an awesome motor for the last 10 years. I put in a new water pump and thermostat just this past spring. Now I blow the overheat alarm and it dumps me down to S.L.O.W. mode every time I'm at wide open throttle for more than a couple minutes. The tell tale is strong and luke warm. My temp gun reads 150 - 170 on the cylinder heads and mid 140s on the thermostat housing. I've dropped the lower unit and have checked the water pump and checked the thermostat in boiling water to make sure it opens. I changed the temp. sensor near the thermostat and it still does it. If I unplug the temp. sensor the alarm stops. I don't know what normal operating temp should be. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Overheat Alarm..

If you are still using the original thermostat housing you might want to change to the superseding part #0434137 - the originals stuck in the seats. Also check the thermostat seat; if the housing is corroded there is a replacement part #0336416 that is better.

If your motor was not upgraded, you may have air in your cooling system. Click the thumbnail, please.

The color of the wire is one solid color either a light brown or tan. It's hard to tell. Can't read any of the writing on the wire without removing it. Of course, I didn't save the box it came in so I'm not even sure about the part number. Gonna do some more investigating....

If your water temp(lake water) is higher than 70 degrees you may need a different temp sensor. Part # 584166. This is set to go off at higher temp. It has a tan lead with a blue tracer. Evinrude ser bul # 2221

That's the wrong one. Try the 0584589 which supersedes 0584166, however, the other problem areas still need to be considered.

0584589 is the BRP superseding part number - its the same specs as 0584166, tan with blue.

I don't have service manuals for motors that small, but I believe that the temperature switch with the solid tan wire closes at around 203? F. and the ones with the tan and blue wire close at around 211? F.

If 584589 temp sender is the same spec as 584166 temp sender than then that switch trips at 240 degrees. Installing this switch was recommended in OMC service buletin # 2221

Re: Overheat Alarm..

Service Bulletin # 2221 does not give any temperature information regarding the closing and opening temperatures for the switch.

No, but OMC service seminar books from 1996 and 1997 do. In that service bulletin they recommended replacing the temp switch.
