Re: Overheat alarm. Remember the beer offer? Still on!

Greetings everybody!

I kinda give up until it blows up! Well, not really but I still have no answer to this. I ran it all weekend from slow to fast and in between and only once did the alarm sound. Go figure. The weather is a bit cooler but not that cold. In fact I was skiing and the water was just fine, thank you very much! I guess I really need to install a h2o pressure guage to really know what's going on in there.

Thanks for all the input, and happy boating to all!
Chris

Re: Overheat alarm. Remember the beer offer? Still on!

Just read your post and want to relay this. I had a customer with a pair of 250 EFI's that were overheating and sounding the alarm. We tried everything. Finally pulled the powerheads off and the ehaust was really clogged with carbon build-up. Cleaned the carbon and ran great without overheating. If the water can't escape from the block the temperature will increase. Don't know if this will help. Just something that I ran into.

I have had similar problems also. And after hours of chasing what I thought was an overheat problem turned out to be an electrical gremlin in the wire harness connectors. I cleaned and treated all of the push/pull connectors on the engine harness and never had the problem again.........Try it.......just a thought!

Coves, I just did a pressure gaug system on my 89 200 Merc, not much of a job. The only problem, you need a hole for the gauge, which I had since took out the trim gauge which was worthless anyway.

HEY, THIS IS A BIT OUT THERE BUT I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH MY 1991 BLACK MAX 175. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND A BUNCH OF MONEY TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY IT WOULD OVERHEAT AT CERTAIN RMPS AND NOBODY COULD HELP. TURNS OUT MY OUTBOARD WAS MOUNTED A FEW INCHES TO0 HIGH ON THE TRANSOME BRACKET. AT CERTAIN RPMS (FOR ME B/T 3000-3300) IT WOULD BEGIN TO OVERHEAT. DUE TO THE SHAPE OF THE HULL AND THE MOTOR BEING A BIT HIGH IT WAS TAKING IN TO MUCH AIR AND OVERHEATING. ONCE I LOWERED THE RMPS IT PICKED UP ENOUGH WATER AND COOLED QUICKLY. I DROPED THE MOTOR A FEW INCHES AND NEVER HAD THE PROBLEM AGAIN. JUST A THOUGHT

Re: Overheat alarm. Remember the beer offer? Still on!

Greetings everybody. I thought I would throw this out there. I think the overheat problem is now resolved. Two boating seasons I have been putting up with this and if you all recall this post and an earlier one from the Fall of '05, no body could figure this out. As a final effort, last month I took it to the dealer/mechanic and said, "FIX IT!, Whatever it takes." On the lake trip to the dealer this was the FIRST time in two seasons I noted the telltail was now really weak and at times non-existent. At ALL other times it was always strong, and normal appearing although I obviously could not keep an eye on it every boating moment. They pulled the lower unit and probed up the water intake pipe and lo and behold they found a partial blockage of some black gooy unidentifiable organic matter at the junction of the exhaust plate and the power head. Go figure. It sort of makes sense now why the overheat was intermittant. This is a low pressure/high volume system. At 3k rpm, the poppet would open but with restricted intake the head temp would go too high. At other times, with cooler lake water, or running higher rpm's forcing more water through it would not overheat. Anyway, the lesson here is look for the simple stuff first. I was about to replace computers, pull power heads, and had already replaced a bunch of other parts. I asked the mechanic how many times a season he sees this kinda a thing and he said maybe two times. THis is a very busy marina and they see this only twice a season!? Murphy sure had me in his sights on this one. He said when doing general maintenace and pulling the lower unit, they never look UP the water intake pipe. Why would they? Especially if the tell tale is normal. THis has been really wierd, to say the least, but I sure know my boat engine now!
BTW, the mechanic got the beer! Happy boating, all!
CC
