Overheat alarm at idle... I think??

Hello, I just purchased a 2005 V-Max V150TLRD and when I start it up I get a constant alarm going off. I was told it sounded like the overheating alarm. Now I DO have a nice steady stream coming out of the "Tell Tale", none of the "Idiot lights" came on (if they even work) and the water pressure gauge did not appear to show pressure. (Not sure if that's working either. I did not try to rev the engine due to the alarm and shut it right down) Like I said I just bought it and this is the first time starting it with earmuffs. I have no clue what the history of the boat is as the gentleman I bought it from only had it for a year and maybe had it out for an hour. As far as the water pressure gauge goes, I'm going to check and see if maybe the hose is clogged. Anyone have any ideas about this alarm??

Are both your oil resevoirs filled? Are the oil float sensors floating in the oil?

Both reservoirs are full, but I can't quite get the screen out yet to check for anything floating. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do any work on it till the morning. However I will get back to as soon as I find out.

Do not pull the float out until you drain the tank of oil
if you pull the float and screen out you may let stuff get by the screen that could plug up the internal passages.
also you will need to make sure you get the screen back in and sealed properly before add oil back in.
have you checked to see if you have the water in fuel filter switch on the motor.
that could cause the alarm at key on.

does that mean your filter on the motor does not have the switch?
or are you saying the filter with a switch just does not have water in it?
the switch could go bad if you have that, giving a false indication.

No, there is no switch, I had checked it for something unrelated.

Is the buzzer itself defective ?
You see, that's another big problem... I don't know. Like I said, I just bought this boat and I have NO clue on it's history. However... Most of the things I'm looking at, (Thermostats, Poppet Valve, Thermosensors, floats, etc...) are all pretty much small, cheap easy fixes which will all (Whether the solve the problem or not) give me future piece of mind. I was planning on replacing the water pump anyway, Just not all this! LOL!! If none of these fixes work, I just may have to (Unfortunately) take it to a shop.

Ok, just giving an update on my question about "Overheat Alarm at Idle" question. So far I have been able to rule out... The Oil Tank on the motor, while testing I also found out that the "Oil Pressure Idiot Light" does work! (Bonus!!
😂
) I also ruled out the 2 Thermosensor switches as both tested fine and no water in my fuel filter. I did however, find 1 bad thermostat stuck open, (I have a pair on the way). Now, I am still going to replace the Water Pump (Which I intended to do anyway) and the Poppet Valve, (Just because). Will post more updates in the future. And once again... Thank you all so much for your suggestions and help, I'm no mechanic so ALL suggestions are welcome!!!!

Just to let you know, the 2 stroke Yamahas do not have a low oil pressure light,
It would be a low level alarm.

and I do not see how a stuck open stat would cause an overheat alarm

I had never heard of a poppet valve or knew what they would be for. Found a great vid. here on the subject. Are these a regular maintenance item?

First thing to do is get your hands on a " factory service manual", forget the aftermarket manuals as they are only good for spare toilet paper !! The manual will describe what the beeps mean and what to check. Each motor can be a little different. Or...you can throw parts at it and hope sooner or later it might get fixed...

Me neither, it was just something I found. I've gotten ALL kinds of suggestions on what that alarm could have been, from the water pump to the poppet valve, to the oil tank on the motor... I mean, alot of the things I did replace, I was going to do anyway because I did not know the boats history and didn't want any surprises when I finally out on the water. However, I did learn quite a bit about an older 2 stroke Yamaha cooling system! LOL!! I honestly don't have any clue what that actually caused that buzzer, but all I do know is that it's gone.

You know, I always get the factory service manual every time I get a new Harley. I think you're right... I should do the same with an outboard!! Thank you!!
