I have 35 h.p. eveinrude outboard motor and it get hot even though the water pump is pumping water. It's make is a 84 model. Can over heating cause the head gasket to go bad? There is no thermostate. I thought that it would run cold before it would run hot. HELP!!!

Re: over heating

Rathe....whenever an engine gets hot and the impller is good and the t-stat is out, it means pluggage somewhere or possibly the supply tube from the pump is broke or cracked. Can you give us some info on the engine like, did you just replace the impeller? What indications are there that the water pump is working. If the overheat is bad enough and it's long enough, you can warp a head.

Re: over heating

I just bought this boat and they said that they had just replaced the water pump. I have a manual but it doesn't say anything about any outer reasons that the motor may be getting hot. Will this damage the head gasket if there is over heating? Will it foul the plugs? It doesn't want to fire now.

Re: over heating

Rathe....to much heat will destroy anything. Unsually, if the engine gets hot and is shut down right away, no damage is done. It is sustained over heat that damages.

I'd like to repeat my question from my last post, what indication did you have that the water pump was working? When "they" said they just replaced the impeller, did "they" mean that a mech done the work or did they? When the motor was running, did you get a tell tale stream from the pee hole in the lower pan?

Some things you can do to check the engine out are....take a compression test to determine what shape the cylinders are in.
Take a spark test. This will let you see if the cylinders are getting spark. Your engine should jump a 7/16 gap with a hot blue spark.
If you have to, pull the lower unit and check the water pump impeller.
If you don't know if the carb has ever been overhauled, do it.
Get an OEM service manual that will show you how to do these things in detail.

Re: over heating

Jim, when I first got it runnning(after the new head gasket and exhaust gasket and spark plugs) there was waster running out of the pee holes in the back of the engine about half way down. But there was none comeing out of the exhaust below where the calon ataches to the top of the motor. When we replace the exhaust gasket it looked like there was some water crust inside but none has ever come out. As far as the water pump its self the guy who sold me the boat said that he had it replaced and had it backed in the water and tested it. He said it was done at the shop. I hope this helps you help me . Thanks !!!!!!!!!!
