Re: over heating
Rathe....to much heat will destroy anything. Unsually, if the engine gets hot and is shut down right away, no damage is done. It is sustained over heat that damages.

I'd like to repeat my question from my last post, what indication did you have that the water pump was working? When "they" said they just replaced the impeller, did "they" mean that a mech done the work or did they? When the motor was running, did you get a tell tale stream from the pee hole in the lower pan?

Some things you can do to check the engine out are....take a compression test to determine what shape the cylinders are in.
Take a spark test. This will let you see if the cylinders are getting spark. Your engine should jump a 7/16 gap with a hot blue spark.
If you have to, pull the lower unit and check the water pump impeller.
If you don't know if the carb has ever been overhauled, do it.
Get an OEM service manual that will show you how to do these things in detail.
